Engine Oil

Post by Salty Dog »

Sorry I searched but TapTalk did a horrible job of it.
I know most use Motul 10/40w with Ester.

My local shop sadly doesn't stock any Motul products though.

These seem to be my choices... none of which are very cheap :-(

I think you'll find semi-synth will be better for your clutch...

Others will be along shortly to argue the toss about the benefits of a semi over fully & the need for a good lube.

Personally I use Silkolean but the Semi-synth version of the one pictured.

Those prices are $ right... 8O

Opie oils also do a forum discount BTW
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

You have to watch the labelling on the Castrol power1 oils. It will say if it's fully synthetic and wont say anything if semi synth.

not a great choice you have there, most people use a 10w40 semi synth, the Silkolene one you want is Super 4 or their V twin specific oil, Motul oils 5000/ 5100 are also a popular choice, but truth be told any motorcycle oriented 10w40 from a reputable supplier will be perfectly fine.

Most people choose based on brand loyalty personally I favour Motul , but if I couldn’t get that brand I’d be perfectly happy with a 10w40 from a good brand ie Silkolene, Shell etc, etc.

The problem you’ve got is lack of choice and of the ones listed I’d choose the Comp 4 simply because it’s 10w40 which most people believe is the most appropriate viscosity, unfortunately it’s also the most expensive.
I don’t consider a fully synth is necessary for the VTRs relatively low revving V twin but by the same token it won’t do it any harm.

Can you not mail order some? Lots of places do an oil and filter package, IIRC I paid less than £30 for oil (Motul) and a filter inc delivery from M&P

I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,

Bare in mind this is in Oz IIRC Salty Dog is in Australia. So with their Hotter Winters and Summers the 15w 50 may suit better if one lives in the hotter parts of Oz. The Hotter climate would most likely thin it out to the equivalent of 10w 40

The Silkolene with the Yellow label would be my choice. I think this is a Semi synth as it don''t say Fully like the Red labelled Silkolene and it's cheaper which also suggests semi synth. Oil manufacturers are crap at labelling things in a simplified form.

You will also need a little more than 4l if changing the oil filter. These bike take a total of roughly 4.2l from empty to full.

all excellent points, it's easy to forget about the difference both in product availability and climate requirements for users in other countries.
