Misfire at 6000 rpm

Post by trotzki69 »

Hi
Just been out for my first ride on my storm just had full service plugs ,oil, air & oil filter .She started straight away sounding well Sat afternoon ready for a ride Sunday morning then when I went to her she tried to start then the battery gave up managed to start it with a boost charger and off I went for a short ride to see if it was charging .
Filled with fuel started sweet then noticed a small misfire at low revs say around 3000 rpm, then more of a serious misfire at 6000rpm .Checked pipe work could this be battery related?
Any help much appreciated
Cheers

Regulator rectifier is probably gone. Get a volt meter on the battery terminals; if under 13 volts or over 14.8 stop it and buy a new one- see the threads on reg/recs on this forum. Then hope you haven't killed your battery as well.

Subject to checking the charging rate (as Tony says) first I hope, unless yours is the older un-finned type, then yes worth replacing even if it's not that,

The cam timing can't go out all by itself, has the bike been fitted with new/replacement CCT's, or had the valve timing/clearances done, by any chance?

AH, there's your problem. The numpty got the valve timing 180 degrees out.
It's easy to do, as there is a TDC for the front cylinder that occurs just after the TDC for the rear one, but you should ignore that one and rotate another (crank) 360 degrees before setting the front one. Schoolboy error, but easily fixed, and no damage will have been done.

Was it, by any chance, a main dealer?
If so, name and shame, and ask them to read this thread- they can call me for advice, if a bit confused..... LOL
