Your right the TI did add an extra element of difficulty, also the smooth taper on my links. I don't know for sure as I have not tried an SP1 link but it may more or less fit straight on apart from the diameter, as the angles look the same as the Storm, whereas the SP2 is way off. But like you say if your prepared to cut the end off, it's straight forward enough to have a 90 degree made up to fit, especially if Stainless, but this does mean an extra clamp then unless welded. Best to go with a smaller diameter to fit inside rather than larger going over the outside IMO as this gives a few more mm clearance between the link and chain.
The right hand side link is hardly an issue as the angle is good with a twist on the link. I trimmed a few mm of the header outlet on mine to get both links coming out the same distance rearward and clamped straight on.
The other thing to note is that when upswept like that, they are awfully close to touching the bottom side of the swingarm on both sides. Also the heal clearance on the rearsets. Better if you have them raised a tad as having the pegs lower and/or more rearward touches the links. For the upswept look I prefer SP cans as the outlet is pointing in the right direction therefore no rain gets in, well...minimal, when the bike is sitting around and not running. I'm sure this make a bit of difference aerodynamically as well with the exhaust flow directed more rearward rather than upwards. The extra length of the can should give a little bit more bottom end too.
Oh...and say goodbye to pillions or panniers.
