headstock weld cracked
Evening all, I went camping over the weekend, got to the site, threw the side stand ground plate on the ground, dropped stand and got off my bike, 10. Mins later while I was inside the tent there was a massive crash, turns out I'd parked my bike on the softest ground on the entire planet, it smashed my left mirror clean off
Right that's the story, sent a mate for some new mirrors today and after I fit them tonight I noticed a hairline crack in my headstock weld that I hadn't seen before, so my question is how hard is this to rectify and/or does anybody know of a good welder in the hull/Yorkshire area.
Thanks in advance

Re: headstock weld cracked
if the crack is from one of the two mounting points for the front subframe (bracket that holds the clocks) the bike might be considered a write off by an insurance company, even tho its a fairly easy fix...

HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!

Re: headstock weld cracked
if its acrtually a crack in the headstock (where the steering stem is) my guess is that it was there before it fell over but now that you were examening your bike, it caught your eye. falling over may have made it worse but its hard to imagine that just tipping over would crack your frame, especially since you said the ground was so soft

It's on the weld where the top beam joins the headstock, I will post pics tonight.
Re: headstock weld cracked
My guess is too many poorly executed wheelies, letting the front come down too quickly hitting the road hard. It could have happened before you got the bike even.
If it were me I wouldn't mess around trying to repair it.
Chris.

Re: headstock weld cracked
It can be welded easily enough, but the heat can warp the frame. A specialist such as Maidstone Motoliner can weld it and check the frame for straightness, but if your insurance company knew about it the bike will be written off.
So don't tell them.....
A replacement frame is easiest, except for having to explain to your insurance company why you are changing reg numbers....
And you will have to tell DVLA, as the frame and engine numbers won't match.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
