Oil

Post by masked gerbal »

Need some help guys.

My bikes got 15,559 miles on the clock and was fully serviced at 12,000 miles with oil replaced etc etc. Doing a few checks at the weekend and notice that oil was low. Filled her up (ooh err !) and she took 700 ml of oil ! Do storms use oil at this rate ? Is it normal ? Or did the Honda dealer simply not fill her right up ? Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

My first storm used to burn a bit of oil at around that mileage when thrashed & when i checked with honda they told me the consumption was within tolerance?
make sure you are using a good semi synthetic, as fully is not recommended & just keep an eye on it

I was going to ask about oil usage, but you guys have answered that one for me....I too was a bit worried about the drop in level....
Does anyone know which oil Honda recomend...or a good replacement ?[[

Hoona,

Motul 5100 semi-synthetic is supposed to be one of the better oils.

I was told that using Castrol will give you a lot of moisture in the breathing system.(dunno, as I did not use it).

Fully

Stormtrooper,

please explain why and where fully is not recommended for the VTR as I have always used fully once the bike had done about 4to8k.

Apparently full synthetic does not stay on the surface of vital parts if the engine is not run for an extended time.

Semi-synthetic does stay and gives better start up protection.

 Then again,... how many Fire Storms sit about for more than a day without being ridden   Cozzz they are just tooo much FUN.

As I understand it's the opposite to that as mobil have allegely run engine that had dump the oil and not seen any wear as the addatives in the oil coat the metal parts. Also the bro inlaw races cars and when he couldn't afford mobil 1 (times got hard and had to buy some cheap shite) he noticed that 3/4 into a race he would loose about 1/2 of his oil pressure as apposed to mobil 1 which held a higher pressure level than normal for the whole race.

I think the basis is that some people think you won't reake the benifits of fully synth oil but i think thats tosh cos surely the better the oil the better for the engine, unless ya clutch slips, ummm.

Agreed .. that full synthetic is an excellent oil and holds its viscosity better than mineral oil,.. but as you may know car oil has a different additive package to bike oil.
Semi-synthetic is a halfway solution that gets a lot of the positive results of fully synthetic without the extreme anti-friction items that can upset the clutch package of many late bikes. It also helps relative to cost ($).

Fully synthetic is capable of running 12,000km( 8,000miles) between changes.
Mineral oils is a 6,000km(4,000mile) oil.

All is not set in stone.. if you can afford it .. go with what ever gives you the most peace of mind.
