Having shared details of my ccts disaster, thought I'd share some helpful info and better memories. Thankfully the ccts held out when I was charging across France earlier this year for the first time. Spent a lot of time trying to find some "authentic" accommodation with secure parking near Dijon, avoiding the faceless hotel chains. Right in the centre of town is Hotel le Sauvage, approx 65 Euros for a large twin room, brekkie and secure parking for several bikes and all the charm you could wish for. From there we headed to Annecy and bunked down at the Hotel Alery, similar price, bikes safely tucked up - well worth it and fantastic biking country.
Touring, like bike maintenance, just plan it and do it (but sort yr ccts before you leave Blighty) !!
