Flat bar GSXR?

Post by Miztaziggy »

I came across this the other day and it got me thinking

http://www.topyokes.com/fix_the_painful ... ition:/325

It seems decent value for what it is. If it works it would save me a few thousand on a second bike which would be good.

I haven't really got a clue what goes into a conversion, so wondered this:
- Will it negatively affect the handling for track days etc? If so, how easy will it be to change back and forth, say swap back to clip ons for track and this for road?
- Will it be that much more comfortable? Worth doing?
- How much does it really change the riding position, from the standard on your wrists?
- What else is needed to do this, eg I will need a handlebar, but will I be able to use my existing throttle and brake levers?
- Why does the kit include new brake lines and clutch lines? I already have upgraded braided hoses, will they not suffice?

will it upset the handling? don't know, it will need some different setup as you have less weight over the front wheel, but it should be possible to set it up to work well.
should be able to change back and forwards to clip-ons but you will have to take the yoke off to put the clip ons on, as yours are under not on top like the storm, and all the suspension settings would need swapped back.
if your wrists and your back hurt then it will fix it, but you will get lots more wind blast.
it will be night and day different riding position as you know when you tried my bike.
you will need bars and a new set of grips for the left side at least. get ultra low bend renthals.
the new brake and clutch hoses are because they need to be longer as the bars are higher and wider.

as long as you don't need to cut the fairing it could be worth an experiment to see if it does what you want

Hey Ziggy, my recent track bike purchase will have Renthal MX bars over winter and then I'll pop the clipons & race fairing on in summer for the track.

The brake/clutch lines need to be longer as the bars are further away from the calipers etc. You may get lucky with the length of throttle cables etc.

I found the front end to be much lighter with the bar conversion, but your body position will affect that.

with upright bars, there is much less weight going through your wrists but more through your back/elbow... my back didn't like being too upright. The gsxr would be interesting, with all that power and short wheelbase!

(by interesting I mean.. awesome!!)

I don't think it would help as on track and road it's too much of a compromise,ie seat and peg settings ,also it's a lot of work to swap back and forth, for road riding you really need a sport tourer say bmw f800r then you will finally be able to go round corners.

CNC (coolncomfy) bar conversion is the same company Bigtwinthing used on his Firestorm for his flat bar conversion,

And what about the throttle side? Is it possible to dismantle the standard ones (usually on most bikes for instance) and then refit that to an aftermarket bar?

If not, then can throttle assemblies be bought that will fit most bikes with the cable type throttle?

So didn't you get on with the flat bars? Are you going to fit them to your road storm?

I've got a throttle you can have mate be awesome on the gsxr ,came off the sidecar would make your life 'interesting' but possibly short, for all the oldies it's a quarter turn high lift that was considered too extreme as we were running a jag fuel pump oh them were the days ,nearly bloody killed us,but what a friggin laugh.oh yeah it was a GSX1100motor and mikuni flatslides.

Yes. Just undo the two screws on the throttle housing, loosen the cables, take the nipples out, throttle tube slips off. Resemble on the new bars.
Helps a lot to loosen off the adjuster next to the carb as well.

I did like them for mucking about  Great for comfort etc, but my back ached a bit after a long ride.

I went back to clipons purely because of my riding style, I like to be over the front and move around a bit through the twisties, I found the flat bars not quite suited to "making progress" and a bit restrictive.

But there are people who ride very well with flat bars, so it must be a case of adapting your style a bit.

The oposite lock you can get as the front comes up out of corners feels flippin' fun!

As you know, I love the flat bars on the storm, the bike was made for it, not sure about a gixxer though!

I dropped the forks a bit more to move the weight a bit more forwards, and I still ride over the front wheel when I am making progress, it just means I can sit up more when I don't want to go for it.

Switch gear can reach, you may have to lengthen the horn wires... cue jokes about the length of your horn...

Mind you this is Storm I'm talking a bout...You may have different issues with GSXR as in lengthening wires...
