Re: Fitting a mini Bi-xenon HID projector
I think it will be fine tbh as it will pass an mot without the projector and with just the hids
Re: Fitting a mini Bi-xenon HID projector
yes the red light that lights the optic of the projector is a fail but as I mention in my first post its easily disconected prior to mot.cybercarl wrote:I wouldn't believe anything in wiki-pedia as anyone can input info to it.the above is taken from wiki-pedia.
Here's the VOSA MOT testing manual for more accuracy.

I think you will have to chuck a standard headlight in for the MOT I can see one failure straight away with the coloured (Red) lights on the outer ring.

I guess ill find out next september.

Looks very good

Hi Diabolus
I know this an old topic, but I've just bought a 2006 VTR and I find the headlamp very poor. Your link to ebay shows the HID projector kit that you bought is a 2” diameter type. 2.5" and 3" diameter units are now also available on this site. Do you reckon a larger 2.5" or 3" projector assembly would fit the existing shell? Has anyone tried the 50W version or would this generate too much heat – I live in sub tropical Queensland where ambient temperature in summer can exceed 30C.
Also Aus spec bikes have low beam wired into the ignition (no sidelight, low beam on at all times when ignition on – not sure if you have this in UK?), so the light is on when starting the engine. Does anyone think this is likely to cause problems with the HID bulb?

High-intensity discharge lamps (HID lamps) are a type of electrical gas-discharge lamp which produces light
by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed inside a translucent or transparent fused
quartz or fused alumina arc tube. This tube is filled with both gas and metal salts. The gas facilitates the
iarc's initial strike. Once the arc is started, it heats and evaporates the metal salts forming a plasma, which
greatly increases the intensity of light produced by the arc and reduces its power consumption. High-intensity
discharge lamps are a type of arc lamp.
If you fit a projector that is not switchable when you start the bike the starting process fires up but when you hit the start button the ballast detects a major drop in power and cuts the starting process then restarts when bike is running and voltage is steady. in effect your hid will fire up twice everytime you start the bike reducing llife span of the system. as to heat the system runs cooler and less draw of power than a standard bulb.
I deemed 35w and 2" plenty bright enough and went for that type but its down to personal choice .

Re: Fitting a mini Bi-xenon HID projector
There are lots of units on e-bay all I can say is the supplier i used has proven to be reliable so far all works fine still even after several drenchings in wet weather and running the bike and lights for upto 12hrs at a time on long trips.

Re: Fitting a mini Bi-xenon HID projector
Thanks for the words of wisdom, Diabolus.
I may try the US Superhawk forum and see what the experience is there regarding any reduced reliability / durability, as I think US bikes have headlamp wired permanently on, same as here.

Re: Fitting a mini Bi-xenon HID projector
all newer bikes in UK have too. just older bikes are switchable.
