Some of you may have seen my post about the adjuster ring snapping on my rear shock on Hogthrob...

I agree it's always worth giving a bike a good check over before buying, to make sure you are buying at the right price. But I couldn't have predicted the shock preload adjuster snapping or the condition of the linkage bearings while stood on someone's driveway.

The bike was a sh1tter, a cheap sh1tter, but I knew that and have been working my way through getting it up to scratch, all that's left is sorting the linkages and when I'm feeling brave attempting to remove the headers/ replace the header bolts.

you need to spray the bolts with wd40 or something similar for several days mate, at least twice a day, other wise they stand a fair chance of snapping, going by the rest of the bike I don't fancy your chances.... :(
I also have spare headers if you need them dude.
good luck mate

Nice one

I have been thinking about your linkage and how it's snapped the bolt. I rekkon the shock spring when it unsprung itself and released it's energy it must have put forces on the linkage. Now when it unsprung it would have gone a bit sideways rather than straight up which would have put those forces more to one side. The side of the snapped bolt possibly  I wonder if the seized linkage had any part to play, possibly contributing to snapping the shock adjuster.

I want to hear what Al's got to say.
when I'm feeling brave attempting to remove the headers/ replace the header bolts.
Oh no...... :eek2 :( you know what's coming. I'd get spraying some plus gas on them now on a daily basis. Let it do it's stuff and work it's way in.

Jamie
I had to cut mine both sides to get the centre part out

The bolt ends came out using a drift

One side of yours is already done!!

Just cut the other side

I used a grinder with a disc for cutting stainless steel

Don't even try to get the exhaust nuts off.
Just use a nut splitter and fit some shiny new nuts.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Try heating the swingarm up with a blow tourch or hairdrier to expand the alluminum, this should allow enough expansion to release the hold on of the bolt.

Some will say the bolt will expand as well, it will but aluminium has a greater coefficient of expansion than the steel bolt, which means the ally will expand greater with less heat than the steel bolt approximately 3 times.

Did you see the Guy Martin spitfire programe last night? The heat from holding an alloy bolt was enough to expand it so it wouldn't fit. Cooled for 30 mins it slotted straight home.

Yep that was some mighty tight tolerances there. IIRC the heat from his hands holding it for 15mins made it expand 0.3 though, 3 though but the smaller scale. I think I'm correct with adding the zero in front for the next scale down  Anyway you know what I mean. Fantastic programe that was and almost brought a tear to my eye at the end. I'd love a Browning on my Storm  Even more so.....I would have loved to have been alive during that era to fly a Spitfire in warfare. How cool must that have been. So sh1t scared with fear that it's an adrenaline rushed addiction. I wonder if that's what Guy and the others experience during the TT.

Yep she lived to work not work to live. Very lucky woman to enjoy her work so much. I expect it helped that most of her colleagues where also school friends.

Also grip the bolt with large mole grips or similar whilst heating and they will draw heat away from the bolt allowing other ares to expand more. It does work

Just stripped the swingarm, linkages and shock out, with the intent of greasing up the linkage bearings and replacing the shock.

I loosened all the linkage bolts before removing the swingarm and was surprised to find one of the bolts was incredibly tight, i couldn't budge it, so I figured I'll have a go at it when the swingarm is out...

Turns out the bolt has sheared off in the gap between the swingarm lug and the linkage 8O 8O 8O

Image
It must have been like this while I was riding, as the bolt is seized both ends I haven't managed to turn it to shear it myself!

So now I'm stuck with a seized bolt both ends, which has miraculously sheared in the middle.

So, I reckon the linkage bearing has dried out and seized onto the bolt, when the linkage rotated it has sheared the bolt in situ.

I'm at a loss, I can't remove either end of the bolt :(

I have a spare swingarm but I would need to source a spare triangular linkage I suppose.
Can't you weld a nut on the end of that bit of stud that's sticking out and crank it out?
other than that, stud extractor?
What about trying to press it out? Take it to an engineering shop, they might be able to do it for you.
failing that, cut it flush and just drill the bugger out.

Also someone suggested wd40 - No offence, but wd40 is about as useful as tits on a fish when it comes to getting off stuck bolts/nuts etc. Get some plusgas and be amazed at the magnificence!
Failing that, ATF (auto transmission fluid) mixed with acetone or thinners does a better job than wd40 ;)
