Changing the Fork Oil

Post by Stratman »

Today I started on a few "winter" jobs on the 'Storm. New rear wheel bearings fitted, new front discs (had a slight warp for ages and got fed up) and finally replace fork oil and oil seals. First two jobs done no problems, but The Haynes Manual says you have to dismantle the forks before doing this, 8O but surely there is a simpler way? The reason I ask is because the damper rod allen bolt won't budge and if I don't really have to remove it I shan't bother trying!

How has anyone else done the jobs?

Thanks
:P

Are the seals leaking?
the reason I ask is because if they are not why not just take the whole fork leg off and tip it upside down to drain them?

while were on the subject do you think it will be better for me to change the springs and fork oil myself or to get revolution racing to do it. i dont mind doing the work myself tbh just wondering if theres any advantages to getting it proffesioanlly done

XXX
It depends on budget

Roger is a lovely bloke and will quite happily impart his bounteous knowledge over the phone

Cheap option -fit 0.85kg/mm springs and oil to suit as per his recommendations £80 ish

More expensive option - post them to Roger. He will fit the same springs, cut down the spacer to keep the free length the same and work his magic on the compression and rebound valves £200ish

Roger did my forks and changed the back shock last year, He set it all up and it was like riding a different bike on the way home.

Made up a special Allen key for the damper rods and got them of fine. Just need a tube withan inside dia of 41 mm to seat the oil seals now!
