New member just purchased Firestorm. Advice please

Post by edgey »

Hi

Just purchased a pre registered 2005 VTR1000F2 Firestorm with nil miles on the clock.

Any advice on the best way to run it in??

Also, i ride all year round so any good tips on maintenance etc.

Thanks and regards

Mark

What kaz said ...welcome m8 ....as for running in.. just ride it .youll be lucky to get over six thousand revs [riding normally] anyway just vary the revs in different gears and dont get carried away with the grin expander[throttle]
like yerself i ride all year round too. and i swear by scottoils protective spray.
keeps corrosion and the worst effects of road salt in check .....

As Zero said,

Just ride it and don't be worried about keeping the revs down, the worst thing you can do is ride it too slowly in too high a gear. Other than that have some fun

I always find that liberal spraying with WD40 keeps things nice and tidy.

Welcome aboard Edgey, as the others said really don't labour (slog) the engine, just change down a gear :!:

One of the best ways to run in an engine is to ride/drive down a pretty steep hill, and take your foot off the accelorator, keeping the bike/car in gear. This forces the rings into the bores and helps them seat properly.

I think the generl consensus is that if you are too easy on an engine when running it, you are more likely to get problems.

Dont be red lining it but dont potter about at >3000rpm either.

Low gear and off the gas.

Thats my 10p worth of internet advice.
It's here.........

Hi Edgey
:D Welcome on Board :D

What they said plus it's not just the engine that needs running in.
Take your time and get the feel of everything first. You've got new breaks, handling, suspension and everything else to get used to so take it steady and ease your way into it. By the time she's ran in hopefully you are too then really give some
Enjoy

Hi

Thanks all for your replys.

It does sem difficult to run it in at anything above 6000rpm, and keep your licence LOL

yeah m8, but throw discomfort into the equation and fun becomes torture very quickly. which begs the question. if i could afford one would i buy say ...
a Ducati 916. which would be a crippling riding experience for me [6ft 4].
just to go for the odd ten minute blast.only to spend the next week in agony.
earlier last year I owned a kawasaki Z750s , brilliant bike! but I just couldnt get comfortable on it. it spent most of last spring -summer in the garden under its cover. I like the storm because i reckon it gives the best trade off between sports styling - handling [with a few tweaks]. and everyday useabillity,-comfort. and i do like nice comfy ride..

Oh Yes!! :P
But thats enough about that. How do you like yours Bikes :D

Seriously though I know where your coming from. I'm only 5' 11 but I still find it on distance runs.
The SP's not as bad as people say on a run but if you had to do much about town stuff you arm/wrist soon let you know
...Now if they could get an SP engine into a firestorm... :P :P :P
