Petrol Tank woes!

Post by DerekH »

Hi everyone,
I have just taken delivery of new to me a 1998 VTR1000F in red which i had purchased without viewing of a well known auction site. I had a VTR1000F a few years ago having taken it in PX and enjoyed it. I sold her on as it was not what I wanted at the time but did enable me to sell my other bike. Anyway having read your site it wetted my appetite I looked for another and found one that had been standing for 10 years. I have had it taken to my local garage and the bike looks like new! Unfortunately I purchased it with a known Fuel leak from the carburetors. The mechanic has shown me the tank and on the outside it is showroom new but inside it looks like varnish and whats not varnish looks like rust!; Arrgghhhh££££! any way I am wondering if you guys can point me in the right direction for someone who can restore this tank? or know of a New one, or as new one in Red! what are your suggestions please? also does the later tanks fit straight on?
Kind Regards Derek :confused
Hi. Guys a quick update! the carbs have now been stripped and cleaned apparently not too bad! Possibly due to vacuum system. Now no leak! All fluids changed and full service. Bike now running and sounding sweet! Hooooray! Mot failed! New number! plate now passed! Just awaiting New tank! My mechanics anal and has admitted that he is extremely impressed by the condition! He has had many museum bikes to recommission and they tend to have many problems, he said it is factory fresh underneath as on top! Still got the cct to be done then I will let you know how test ride goes! ;-) Happier New owner until I get the invoice. Derek

As I said in another thread your carbs need completely stripping and cleaning, an ultra sonic clean done right will get them back to like new, your problem is it's been left with old fuel for too long, it wasn't stored with the carbs drained.. as for the tank there's stuff on youtube that shows you how to clean rust out of a tank, but best talk to a specialist restorer for the best solution, search google.. seems this bike may not have been stored in a heated garage for the last 10 years after all
I wasn't sure about it which is why I didn't contact the seller, was going to wait and see if it didn't sell and make an offer on it, hopefully it turns out a good bike for you, I'm sure itb will. I don't know what you paid for it but I would have offered a lot less than the asking price

Hi Thanks unfortunately I am not great at making offers and have always paid more than maybe i should. The bike is a real Gem and in general very happy with my decision. I am going to buy a new tank from Dave Silvers at £295 +Vat as I intend to keep her long term and worry about the other tank at a later time. I find owning old vehicles that look like new more interesting than new ones. Thanks for your advice and will keep you updated. Regards Derek

If your happy with your bike that's all that matters, that bike looked like new  shame about the tank but I'm sure it can be sorted for a lot less than a new one, I still recommend getting the carbs ultra sonic cleaned or the bike may not run right.

Have you ordered manual cam chain tensioners yet, if not make it a priority and make sure the mechanic knows what he's doing, check out the workshop section for all the info you (and he) will need.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, VTRs are rarely costly to buy and you get a lot of bike for your money guaranteed.

I'd check eBay before going to DSS though, might be cheaper to buy a nice one in a different colour and get it resprayed

What a helpful site! My mechanic is now fully armed with all the data you guys have provided Thanks! He is taking the carbs off and sending off for a pro clean, full service and CCT as I do intend to keep the bike for a long time however do realize the final value of the bike will still be what I have paid for it. I don't mind as long as she is right and an excuse to tell my wife that i can have 2 bikes should I fancy something else later! I see the tanks on the Bay for around the £100 but fear I could inherit the same problem and most have scratches and dents or wrong color. Cost of spray decals etc would soon be near the same price. Anyhow I am probably too keen to hear her start and typically next week someone will offer me a new tank in red for a £100 lol! Thanks again and will update, any members local in Pembrokeshire? Derek :D

I have a tank for sale.

It is Silver & not in best condition paint wise but importantly rust free.

Yours for £50 + shipping...Bargain to get you back on the road whilst you sort your other tank out or have this one resprayed if its beyond saving.

To answer your previous question...the later tanks will fit but it is not straight forward, different pet-rock & fuel level sender on the later tanks.

Hi Guys, I have ordered up the new tank from DSS. Thanks for all your kind offers! I will take a good look at mine when I get it back as I have learnt that with some know how and time that there is still hope for my other tank so may do as a spare or may consider selling depending on what is fair value would be? Great Club and look forward to meeting some of you in the spring. Thanks again Derek!

Hi guys the tank arrived today! What I have noticed is the decal is different. The New tank has the Honda wings where as the old one had firestorm! I assume these are just from different countries? I do prefer the firestorm decals however if the tank fits I will be delighted!

Hi the tank colour is red! It's been taken to the garage( I was going to say dropped off but shouldnt tempt fate) I am sure they will let me know if there is a problem. I notice ones up for auction have different decals also! So not as worried as I was!

Sounds like you have the later 19lt tank. It will fit no worries its just the petcock wont...

As I said before it is not a straight fit as the petcock & the fuel level sender will be different.

When you ordered it did you state it was for a '98 bike ?

Hopefully I'm wrong & it will fit, maybe it is from another country hence the different decal but normally that is the sign of it being a tank for the later model with the larger tank.
