Ron Haslam race school

Post by Virt »

Looking at doing a day here at some point to help improve my riding (and to see if I can get any closer to making Lloyd shut the wombles up!).

Any reviews of the place? I'd be looking at doing the 'Premier Experience' (CBR600RR's), but it doesn't say if you require any previous experience or anything.. It's that or go on CB500's (with 14 year olds..) which I've ridden before and don't much like, but I don't want to go into a group that expects me to have a much quicker pace than I do.. I still vehemently deny being slow, but I'm a long way short of being fast.

Looking at improving my riding this year by doing this and checking out the Birmingham IAMs group as it's a mile down the road

Thanks in advance

I have done it a few times as a mate is an instructor there, both 600's and fireblades, and it will be a big help to identify improvements on riding stiles.

you have to do the 600 training before you are allowed to move to the Fireblade.

when I have more time I can give more details

I had no intention of doing a fireblade, I have a healthy fear of the VTR.. I don't think my fear of a 4pot 1000 can be described the same way

It's more a case of whether I'd be suitable to do the course for the 600, I'm more than willing to learn it's just whether they'd expect me to have a faster pace than I do.

I look forward to your more detailed write up

the 600 sessions will be fine for your ability. they cater for all levels of rider and prefer those who want to listen and learn than those who just want to go fast

Virt, see my post from just before xmas about this.

I booked the premier course for my other half Sarah for her xmas present.

If you book before end of Jan, you can get the 'early bird' special and do any of the 4 dates in April / May at a discount. It's £255 instead of £295. Most years the weather is pretty good in April/May so it's worth doing.

I will be coming down on the day Sarah does hers, it's not booked yet, but will likely be one of the May dates since we're getting married on 25th April. Why don't you book the same thing, get the 'early bird' voucher that Sarah has and you can book onto the same day.

The lady I spoke to in the Ron Haslam office told me that I could buy the voucher now and then book onto the day the week before, therefore waiting to see what the weather is like. If it's unusually cold/wet in May, then she said I can pay the extra £40 and upgrade to any of the other dates.

The reviews I read before booking this are all pretty good. Some people say that you don't get enough time on track, but other than that, they're good. I think you'll enjoy it more if you get 1:1 tuition or if you're 1:2 but with a partner that's not too slow, not too fast. Apparently if you get a partner that's too slow, it can be a bit dull as the instructor will be riding at their pace.

Sounds good! Not sure if I can scrape together the funds to pay for it this month, after having to buy a new bloody bike cover, but I'm not overly fussed about £40 to be honest.

I'll happily book onto a day with you and your fiance/then-wife though. I didn't want to go alone

Keep me informed mate
