Morning all,
I've got a question for you.
As some of you know my storm has been off the road for a while and I'm starting to get it ready to start rebuilding it, will find that tapping/ rattle noise!
I have a few plans, for storm and wanted to ask and see what answers I get back.
The idle gear, how hard is it to remove the springs and separate gear?
While I'm in the clutch side going to replace all the bearings, clutch basket, water pump bearing etc, just to eliminate them as the cause to this ticking noise, anything I need to know?
Going to have the oil pump off and inspect it as well, anything I should be looking for?
While the engines out and on my work bench going to check the the cams etc anything I need to know there?
if it still rattles after that its got to be bottom end or gear box I assume as theres not alot in these engines?
Only other question, I've been looking at the exhaust, can I flip the rear cylinder pipe through 180 degrees so its pointing upwards and the bring the front pipe up and through the hole in the swing arm where the rear one went and put a link pipe in and into a pair of cans under the seat, will it cause issues with running or carburation as front pipe will be longer than it was?
I've got to do some work on the exhaust as the front collar has fallen apart when I undid the bolts, so thought I'd build my own system.
Just want some pointers, that's all.
Oh and incidentally, to all the people that know me and my back problem, I'm now off for more scans to check the status of my L4 disc, as the pain in my right leg is back and the nerve cluster for that comes from L4, so as you can imagine I'm a bit hacked off as was hoping for the all clear from the specialist on Friday but didn't get it, so got another 4-8 weeks of being stuck in limbo, just want to go back to work now!

The quietening gear will jump off all by itself as soon as you undo the bolt holding it on- it's pretty tight.
The trick is to get it back on again!
You'll see that there are two small holes on the two gears, and you can push a rod or screwdriver through and lever them into mesh for reassembly. But removal is just undo the bolt, catch the three springs and put them and a gear in a oily bag for re-use if you decide to put it back on sometime.
You save a bit of weight, lighten the crank assy and with cans on you can't hear any extra noise. Recommended mod.
Re water pump, look for missing blades on the impeller and wear on the ceramic bearing seal.
Re the exhaust, looks simple enough but I'd suggest heat wrapping the rear header to keep the shock from overheating.
Keep a write-up with pics, pls.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
