Front calipers

Post by chris vtr virgin »

Noticed a wee oil patch at the front end whilst bike is up on stands, and it's coming from brake calipers
I reckon it's needing new seals fitted is it an easy job or a nightmare to do

Something really not right if it's coming from the brakes, check the banjo's are not leaking but I'd suspect it's fork seals and the oil is leaking down past the brake calliper.

Are you sure its brake fluid & not fork oil from a weeping fork seal...?

It may also be leaking from the bleed nipple...

If you have a fluid leak you will notice a loss of fluid in the M/C & shite leaver pressure...

Brake seals is quite easy if you have the tools...Seal kits ain't cheap mind.

All you have to do is split the callipers & pull the pistons out. A tip is to pump the pistons out a bit before you remove the fluid. Depending on the callipers fixings you may need a E4 female torx socket.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STAR-FEMALE-T ... 19cc409797

Then you need a piston puller of some kind...DO NOT USE Grips or pliers that grip the outside as it will damage them.

If you want to get the seals & send them & the callipers to me I'll strip, clean & replace seals for you...just cover the postage.

Front stand as well ?

If so there is still the weight of the bike on the forks. Unless the front wheel is hanging in the air there will still be weight on it.

Wipe a finger or white kitchen paper around the fork seal to see if it is oily.

Also check the top banjo fittings with the same wipe test, if they are leaking the fluid will run down the lines...

The smell of forl oil and brake fluid is completely different. Do the smell test.

clean and dry the fork legs. Wrap and tape some tissue round the fork legs placed halfway up the leg. It the tops gets wet its the forks seals. Fork leg, not the shiny chromed bit for the tissue though ok.
