I agree with Mike actually and that is a very good point brought up. it will only get worse once you add cams too. You don't want to over advance things and then detonate.
If anything I think a -2 retarder would be better for you. You have already advanced the ignition by going higher comp hence the knock and suggested use of higher octane fuel with high comps. Note that Roger does not use the advancers either, he is not a fan.
Now you have gone high comp you need to tread carefully. There is no room for trial and error, just stick it in to try, see if if works kind of thing, see what it feels like attitude. You need to start calculating things more. Unless of course you don't mind experimenting at the expense of doing engine rebuilds.
