All I need are tensioners and Del is chucking out whole bloody VTR's !
Main dealer that was ordering my tensioners rang to say that parts are in (close on two months after initial 'phone call to them) only problem is they forgot to get the gaskets.
If anybody wants to know what dealers in Ireland to avoid, give me a shout !
If it's any good Del, I'll get on to the "back - street" guy and see what he uses as a guide to manual tensioning.

Hi Al,

Mine was the VTR that Honda supplied the parts for, free of charge. The dealer told me to phone 'em cos they couldn't do anything to help, but when I finally got thru to Honda they were very sympathetic, and the bike was only in the garage for just over a week. Total cost to me was £280, on a job that should've been over £600.

Definitely worth phoning Honda and asking nicely for help!

Cheers, Steve :-)

Ah Steve, you heard me talking about you !!

I got onto Honda.co.uk two weeks ago and they directed me to Chiswick Honda (the flagship dealers aparently). Chiswick Honda claim to have no record of any tensioners failling before, and the parts department say they rarely order them !?!?! Is the whole world mad or is it just me !?!

Ordered some new ones today £79 a pair from Honda with gaskets! or if you can wait 3 weeks £25 each from David Silver Spares. Paid the extra 30 nuggets it might ave gone pop within 3 weeks!

Can't believe Chiswick Honda haven't heard of VTR tensioners failing!! I mean, would Honda UK contribute to the cost of a repair job on a 4yr old bike if mine was the first one to go pop? Hmm, me thinks not... My local dealer has had 3 bikes go at less than 15000 miles, and the mechanic who fixed mine recommended I get the tensioners changed again after another 12k, just in case....

The debate rumbles on... :-)

well my tensioner packed in on my first storm & it was repaired under warranty, after i sold the bike the other one went & the new owner(who bought from the local bike shop) had it repaired under their warranty.
so there is a theme in there somewhere. they do pack in, but only on the older models apparently

Well i understand that I am in the danger zone. Mine is a -98 with 22000 km on the clock. There is a lot of details regarding changing them, but why do they wear out or need replacement only after 20 - 30000 km? Anyone who knows? I see that some claim it can happen if you use unoriginal oil filters?

Regarding changing them, here is a link to the German site / forum and an article on how to do it... http://www.vtr1000.net/technik/steuerkettenspanner.htm

Went to Tippet's in Tolworth, they admitt its common (there was one in the doorway having it done when I went in) but its only the front one that goes because of the angle they sit the rear gets oil the front dosn't
If you change them yourself, to get the timing right for changing the front tensioner: remove the rear spark plug turn the engine over by hand then as you feel the front piston compressing look for the FT mark in the timing inspection hole (visa versa for the rear). They are a doddle especially if you make the retracting tool as described in the manual Don't forget to prime the new tensioners with some engine oil before you put them on.

Here is a a picture of the manual APE CCT.
Looks to be a simple piece of engineering?

Image

Price USD 46,75 for the CCT and 2,94 for the gasket.
