Fitting the alternator cover

Post by BrianC »

Having fitted a new gasket applied sealant all round i think i have a slight leak. Reading the Honda manual it instructs only applying sealant to the faces where the crankcases joint.

Anyone got any thoughts about this before i yet again drain the oil !!!!

Make sure all surfaces are clean of old gasket and metal surfaces not scored. I can't remember needing to drain the oil when I took off the alternator cover to change it.

With the gasket I greased one side before installing. No problems since and should be easy to remove at a later date if required.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Apply sealant on both sides of the gasket - that works!

If you take it all apart again make sure you remove ALL the old gasket from the surfaces on both the engine and alternator cover. A sharp knife does the trick but be gentle not making any deep scratches. Inspect the surfaces for deep scratches/dents....if a deep scratch is the problem you have to polish it with fine sandpaper. Then apply a thin layer of sealent and spread it with your fingers and assemble again.

Most sealant require 1-2 hours to dry - so be patient and wait.

It's not required to drain the engine oil. A few drops will appear - but that no problem.....
