Gunk Removal
Gunk Removal
Howdy all...
Anyone have any good tips on cleaning the bike - and I am not talking about wax on - wax off type stuff, I'm talking about about removing the black shite that accumulates around the sprocket area - like the sidestand etc. I have tried degreaser and it works well. But it still looks dirty - I have though about investing in a steam cleaner but - have heard these are good but have never tried one. Anyone use one?
Cheers!

cheepest and best i have tried so far is parraffin (sp) on with a 1" paint brush rinse with the hose and bobs yer auntie
avalible in D.I.Y. stores everywhere
i have mmy parrafin in one of those pump action dispensers (you know pump like mad and it holds the preasure)
also from DIY stores and garden centres for pennies

I agree with Sharpe1... Kero & a sponge/brush, will remove road grime/tar & grease without effecting things like the o-rings in your chain, gaskets & seals etc, like degreaser will do.
After you have given the bike a going over with kero, start again with normal soapy water to remove anthing the kero didn't take off.
Kero is about a 1/10 the cost of de-greaser too...

parafin holds water
I was chatting to my neighbour about cleaning chains etc. I used parafin last time and it worked a treat but I found a few tight spots developing afterwards. Easily sorted with a liberal lube but he said parafin absorbs water and that white spirit is better.
