Heavy braking fueling issues.

A few months ago (prior to me fitting mcct), I had the chance to run the bike at the Anglesey circuit.

After hammering it around for about 15 minutes, I approached the left hander "Rocket in" hairpin after a very fast "Church" section.

I was braking heavily & knocking it down the gearbox, ready for "Rocket out" when it dropped onto one cylinder. My initial gut feeling was "Oh no! Cam tensioner failure".

But it did clear after some clutch in & very gentle throttle blipping, but by which time I thought I had wrecked the motor & with my tail between my legs cruised into the pits.

Once in the pits, people approached me commenting on seeing flames & sparks flying from the exhausts a lap or two prior to the engine dropping down to one cylinder. Ffs I thought... Pistons?

To my relief, it did sound ok whilst in the pits, so I took a chance & rode it home gently.

The good news is the sparks & flames were down to "wire wool" being used as packing & being burnt after a good thrashing.

The bad news is that I didn't get to the bottom of the dropped cylinder issue, because it never happened to me again.

Until tonight....

Tonight, whilst on another track evening with my local bike club mates, the same thing happened. Like clockwork.

15 minutes in when the tyres where up to temp & loon braking adopted, at the same place as mentioned previously it dropped on to one cylinder again.

It did clear again after about 30 seconds, but it's very scary. Especially when your leading a pack of bikes, all fighting for club house bragging rights & suddenly you have no power. I was just waiting to be hit from behind.

I appreciate it's a Varadero that has been fitted with VTR Carbs & Cams and an aftermarket Facet fuel pump.

But I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues under extreme trackday acceleration & braking?

I am looking into putting foam baffling into the tank, but am wondering if its maybe a carb issue I have missed.

I'd really appreciate any help or ideas prior to me having to remortgage the house to purchase enough baffle foam for the colossal tank :lol:

Common problem.
You need to relocate the two black overflow pipes that run into the middle of the carbs ,
Just pull them out and let them hang down .

But cut the back one a little shorter or it can get stuck between the throttle cable and throttle stop :eek2

that was not a fun moment.

Cheers Lloydie & Spokes :thumbup: I like easy fixes :D

I'll have a route around the carbs, as it only happens on track & the next time I'm on will be April'ish.

I thought it felt like ye-old fashioned fuel surge, but would never of thought rerouting the carb overflow pipes would fix it.

What's the theory behind this mod then?

Any photo's anyone? Just to give me an idea of where the new pipe routes go & how much to cut?

You can cable tie them in their new positions so they don't get caught up in anything they shouldn't,

The one mistake in the Honda release is they say front carb when they mean the rear carb.

What is causing the issue is the rear carb puking fuel into the front carb.

Personally I just removed both of the vent lines around 10-12 yrs ago and just run the plastic fittings coming out of the carbs, quick and easy with no issues....... so far :angel: :thumbup:
