No spark !!! Is it the starter???? Earthing ???

Post by dizzymole »

Ok, this seems weird but if i try to start the vtr with both plugs in I have no spark but if i remove plug one i do. Which to me indicates that the that the engine is turning over too slow and perhaps the starter is taking too much power starving the spark to the plugs. the battery is new and still the fault exists, although if i put jump leads on, it turns over slightly quicker but will produce a spark and start. the terminal on the starter is clean and no rust as i replaced this thinking this was the fault. Once the bike has done a few miles i get no problems starting even if left for an hour or so. Maybe an earth fault ???

Or it could be battery and shitty connections.
These colder mornings weaken the battery and the oil is heavier so the motor turns slower and puts more of a strain on the battery and its all a vicious circle stealing your plugs juice.
I've even had too much choke cause enough extra load on the engine to sap the battery of enough juice to let it fire up
Try a no choke start and once the engine has spun up (turned over) once, maybe twice, see if it will start then.

Well up in the garage early and the manual cct's were finger tight as expected :-/.
It's been a bit of a problem for a while so sadly I can put it down to cold morning's. This never needs choke to start but the plugs look spot on once warmed up. Battery is new with apparently a higher cca than standard so guess its time to check all of the earthing points.

Is it fingertight then backed off a ¼ of a turn? Fingertight on its own could well be too tight.

There's some debate on quite what 'fingertight' is > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=21520
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
