Gaskets

Post by pmcq »

Hey guys,
I am about to start an engine rebuild in the next week. I have the gasket kit etc for the engine. My question is do I need to use gasket sealer with gaskets or only with the crankcase halves? Maybe this is a stupid question... But do the rubber gaskets have enough sealing properties in them not to use paste or whatever?
Cheers!

I add a little sealant where ever the is a joint between to different shells ie on the side casings but often don't bother on something like the sump which is going onto a single casting(does that make sense?). Also most gaskets which have a greenish or blue tinge to them are inpregnated with sealant so you just need a smooth grease free surface and away you go.
As a std rule of thumb, if I'm not sure I add some
