ohlins shock advice

Post by alan »

Hi
i have just treat myself to an ohlins shock to go with my new conversion and was wandering if anyone had any kind of settings or where i could get some from or is it just a case of riding and a bit of fiddling till i feel comfortable with. Any advice would be much appreciated

I am about 5ft 8 and about 11 stone (in all my gear :D )

Listen to Kaz, she's talking sense (for the first time in . . . .)
<insert>

As a starting point you need to be looking for 8mm of rear sag (on the Ohlins, not on Kaz!!)
To do this you'll probably need a mate to hold the bike upright

Then lift the rear of the bike til the suspension is fully topped out
Measure the distance from a fixed point (eg tape mark on side panels directly above the rear wheel spindle) - this is measurement A

Now lower the bike so it sits on the suspension, push down on it, release it & let it settle. Then re-measure - this is measurement B

A - B should be 8mm

If its more, you need to add more preload (either twiddle the knob if its got a remote adjuster or using a C-spanner on the locking rings if not)
If its less, do the opposite
Keep measuring til you get the right amount

Now thats out of the way, the damping is really dilute to taste.
What you're looking for is the fastest possible return but in control
ie you push down on the bike and it should bounce back to its static position WITHOUT going past it

Then ride it

The best way to see what does what is to find a stretch of road you know well and ride it once
Then take all the rebound damping (bottom of shock) off and ride it again
Then put it on nearly maximum and ride it again.
You should then have a fairly good idea what rebound damping does (as well as some interesting skid marks in your under-crackers  )

Repeat for compression
Visit dentist to get fillings re-inserted

Hope this helps
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!
