tyre tread conundrum ??
tyre tread conundrum ??
my bike got a runners up medal in its mot a couple of weeks ago .
cant really complain, its gone through the last six with very few problems other than tyres pads etc that were just worn out.
one issue was that it needed new front and rear tyres, front one I was a bit surprised at but hey ho ?
I had a brand new pair of qualifiers that id got earlier so my mot guy swapped them .
when I got it home I was looking at it on the drive and I thought "oh s*** hes got one of the tyres on backwards"??
checking the rotation arrows they were both the right way round so he was correct but the tyre tread viewed from above was one way round on the back and the opposite way round on the front ??
this surprised me .
whats going on, I would have thought if one works one way they would both be the same ??
they are on just like this pic

One is optimized for traction (rear) the other for braking (front).

have a look at Michelin pilots 3`s next time you see them on a bike
I have them and kept thinking the same thing

They both deal with opposing forces, hence have opposing tread patterns.

Ye all good and ye I asked the same question to the person that fitted mine
Re: tyre tread conundrum ??
I had the same thought when I changed from Pirelli Supercorsas to Dunlop Sportmax, the Pirellis have so little thread you really cant tell from looking which way they are meant to go but the Dunlops having more thread just looked like you say that they were on the wrong way, the fronts and rears appeared to have opposite tread directions , which worried me a bit because I'd fitted them !!! But when I checked they were indeed in the right way, the above explanations make sense, but I must admit to initially thinking wombles I've put it on the wrong way. All good in the end though.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R ,

Just don't wheel it backwards if it's raining.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
