Help - Speedo problem

Post by t00lkit »

Just had a Datatool system 3 installed on my VTR1000-F2.

Went for a ride last night (1st time out after fitted) and noticed speedo not working. Rev counter and instrument panel ok, but mileometer and trip not incrementing. Ok for keeping mileage down but not good for my license! (Didn't realise the speedo doesn't work off front wheel like my old fazer.)

Main fuse had been removed as part of install, clock had reset.

Engineer will come back out if needed, but is there a simple fix for this, has anyone seen it before? I think i've read about clocks reverting to km/h but not not working!

(Alarm is working fine)

check that the cable which runs from the speed sensor at the back of the engine hasnt been disconnected. remove the saddle and near to the rear of the petrol tank on the right side just in front of the battery you will find a load of cables with a series of block connectors. The speedo cable has about 3 wires one of which is pink which run into a block connector, If the cable isnt connected properly the speedo will stop working as youve described, find the other half of the connector and re connect it

And if it aint the connector block, your looking at £97 +Vat for a new sender. They are a bitch to get out, one nut is easy, the other is hidden behind the shock. We had 3 knuckle joints on the socket wrench to move it. Oh and dont do what i did. Put the bolts back on the sender and forget to put the battery ground back. Took me a while to work out why bike was dead
Mine packed in a while ago, checked it out as per manual. Dead as a dead thing.
Replaced the sesor, plugged it all together, worked on and off. Thought, oh no, whats up now, but turned out one of the wires had come out of the block (pink wire) so only the supply wires were in. Pushed the wire back and hey presto, bobs your uncle a working speedo.

Thanks for the advise chaps. i'll take a look tonight. It sounds like one of the connectors could have come lose whilst he was under the seat.
fingers crossed.

Checked under the seat and one of the connectors had come undone!
All looks ok now.

Should have checked last night but just didn't get round to it.

Thanks for the advice.
