Honda rectifier converted to a Yamaha unit -How to

Post by bertye »

Hi, all. I thought that a how to do on the rectifier may be of a help. I fitted a new Yamaha one I got from eBay for about £16. The wiring does not correspond with the Yamaha one, as the the 1st link will show. Most seem to cut the wires and put new spades on, which is fine. I decided that I did not want that, so cut the connecting block down the centre long ways. I then sanded the 2 parts down to fit. I hope these links work. I would upload pictures, but don't seem to be able to.

Hmmm good effort but it looks a bit gash IMO.

You can actualy unpick the conectors from the block, bit of heat shrink & plug 'em back in...

It's a how to do, not a lessen in how to make something look Honda made. That would be up to how ever needs to do the conversion The plug is to big for the Yamaha one anyway, so still would need moding. I did try to unpick them but they were not having it. I have done it loads of other times on blocks with no problem. It is in there tight and no one can see it, so what does it matter. It was tidied up before the plastic cowling was put back.

Fair point Bert...

Still be better off fitting a Mosfet R/R,the Yam ones are still a shunt type like the std Honda job so can still suffer the same failure/fate.

Nothing new here. Just cut the block off, put some insulated spade connectors on and be done with it. You could even go as far a s shoving a load of silicone in to seal things up and keep the moisture out. :Beer Popcorn:

Good to see a new member coming up with an alternative option, new or not. Well done Bert

This looks like the connector you need for that R/R unit - http://kojaycat.co.uk/epages/950000457. ... ts/YAZ6WFW

I agree with Kev.

This forum is about input and giving and without that it wouldn't survive. So good on you Bert for taking the time to pass on your experience when you've only been a member on here for a very short time

The early ones are much bigger finned items but still a shunt type so can still fail although tend to be much better that the std origonal Honda unit...

You are much better off looking for a Mosfet type R/R & the later R1 are indeed a Mosfet unit...

I have used a BMW S1000r one on two of my bikes .

Any Mosfet is different to wire in but you can unpick the std block & use the the terminals fitted just a bit of shrink wrap over the exposed bits & your good to go...

The important thing is that the Yamaha R/R is marked as FH (FH012AA / FH020AA) - It''s not exclusive to R1s but most modern day bikes are fitted with mosfet type r/r's which come with different twin connectors to SH conectors as fitted OEM to the VTR. Though there are now advanced SH r/r's (SH775 / SH847) to confuse matters that use the FH style connectors now available
