Fear not young sir
There's nothing gonna leak out and its really not a problem
WITH TWO PROVISOS

1. You don't squeeze the clutch lever while the covers off (not as bad as doing the same with brakes though, just means you have to heave a bit to get the cover back on)

2. There are no X's in your username

CLUTCH SLAVE

Post by alan »

Hi Toby
no fluid will come out when you loosen the slave only if you take the hose off and you dont need to do this to take the sprocket off.

Loosen the bolts around the sprocket cover and the slave ease them forward so you can get at the sprocket.

Read my earlier thread and Bens on how to take the chain off!!

Can you not remove the chain without having to remove the front sprocket :?: if you are only going to clean it and put it back :?:

chain

Post by alan »

I dont know if you have tried Chris but i found its way too tight to get the chain off without removing the sprocket. Its not a difficult job anyway it takes 20 minutes but he needs to soke his chain as he was saying it was rusted quite badly on his earlier posts.

Right here come the pics, bear with me theyre not small....

Image
Image
The state of my chain before any cleaning at all, it comes up much better than this with a simple parafin wipe and toothbrush clean but i thought i would show you it pre-clean.

Image
My nasty dirty calipers, as you can see the bolts themselves are rather rusty...any ideas?

Image
My crashbung, the red line shows where it was to start with, the red arrow indicates the direction of travel. This happen when i dropped my bike at a standstill- doesnt really fill me with confidence i have to say!

Image
My downpipes....and those "oil cooling pipes" (i think thats what they are), once shiny chrome, now pitted with rust!

Image
What happens if you go round the roundabout one too many times!

So, when removing the front sprocket, i can just loosen the red nuts in the following picture and it will come off without pissing fluid everywhere?

Cheers Toby

No Alan I haven't had to replace the chain or sprockets on the Storm yet, I was just just wondering if it would come off without the need to remove the front sprocket making it a easier job, obviously not :!: :)

Sirch,

It will come off without removing the front sprocket but only by using a chain breaker on it and then re-rivetting it once you're finished

TBH, for the little amount of work involved I'd just take the cover off and bless Honda for their lovely pivotless Firestorm frame that makes it SOOO easy

...those calipers look ok to me.
If it was me id just give it all a good clean next time the pads were out.
Its all pretty simple. But MESSY if you havent done it for a while.

As far as the sprocket goes I had mine off for the first time the other week just to clean the chain (still on the bike). I took care not to squeeze the clutch lever but there was no fluid and it all went back together easily.

One thing though, the first time i rode the bike the clutch bite point was all messed up.
I tried to ride off and the bike gave a big lurch and stalled, right in front of next doors kids. . Not an issue though, it went back to normal v quickly. What does that bit even do?    :?:

I was quite interested to read that you can take the chain off the bike without breaking it. Handy hint that.

Well the chains off and soaking as i type! I didnt have to actually remove the front sprocket, just loosened the back wheel right off, took the foot pegs/hanger off and it just slipped off. Good job too as undoing the bolt on the front sprocket looked like a total mission.

Whats that pole that sticks out just in front and connects to the clutch? should it move forwards and backwards?

I'll get my photos up later when ive got my cam back!

Toby,

If the pole you are referring too is coming out of the main shaft which the front sprocket is bolted on, that is the rod that operates the clutch on the other side of the gearbox and it should be free to move in and out :!:

Chris.

Oopps   Wrong bike, the clutch operating rod that I said comes out from the center of the main shaft DOES NOT on the Firestorm it actually comes out in front of the front sprocket, sorry if I've confussed anybody :!:

Chris.
