Using oil

Post by Jesper »

Hey all

Just quick question, I have had my storm for 3 months now and the other day when checking the oil it seemed kinda low so I topped it up and it actually took a good bit to get the level up above minimum, is it normal for the stoms to use a bit of oil ? it is a 98 with 27k mls on it and also I do red line it on a daily basis ( commuting on motorway )
ok ok I'll do it..........later

thanks for the link man, doesn't really give an answer to if I should expect the bike to use a bit of oil.

Maybe I should add that I had the bike warmed up and then let it sit for about 5-10 minutes before checking the oil, that is how I have been doing it on all my bike , this is my first twin so not sure if it would be normal or not use a bit of oil, I know you can expect the in-line 4s to use a bit if you use high revs/redline it a lot.

Aren't you s'posed to check the oil when it's cold?

(Not that I'm really up on this whole 'maintenance' thing...)
If you ate yourself would you become twice as big or simply disappear?

LOL - yep did do that alright, having doubts now wether it is correct to check oil when cold or hot though, have always checked when a bit warm and have never had any problems so probably doesn't make a big difference

The Manufactures normally recommend you check the oil after the engine has been brought up to temperature and then switched off and allowed to settle for ten to fifteen minutes.

Personally I normally check mine after I've been for a ride (or home from work). By the time I've got my gear off It's had time to settle so I check it then

The manual recommends to warm up the engine, then turn it off and let the oil settle for 2-3 minutes. My Storm has 20k miles on the clock and I usually drive below 5000 rpm but it does not need oil any refills.

I use my bike back and fore to work on the motorway.

I'd say I'm a mediocre rider. I don't red line but I don't dawdle either.

I've had to put a surprising amount of oil in. 300ml i think.

Not sure if thats good or bad. I was a bit shocked!

my bike - 51plate - 11k on the clock
Have you noticed when you're riding that everyone going slower than you is an idiot and everyone going faster than you is a maniac?

You guy's who say that the oil needs topping up regularly :!: just a thought, do you have problems keeping the front wheel on the deck :?: in other words do you pull wheelies often, as this imo could explain it :!:
