finally made up a pair of split exhaust flanges

Post by fatfreddy000 »

so, after buggering around or ages i finally purchased 2 x 8mm thick mild steel 45mm bore exhaust ranges on eBay for £11.99.
an afternoon and a few slit discs and a flap disc later i have a pair of split flanges.
they aint as tidy as they could be but not bad for a cheap clamp on vice and old grinder, and as the exhaust itself is in such good nick it would be a sin to scrap for the sake of a flange..
if i had a decent workshop i would make up a load out of stainless.
i will take some photos when on bike and also show you the state of the old one (its just a few mm thick flakes of rust now)

Good work mate. I don't think that looks too bad at all.

Thought about getting them plated?
Nickel or chrome should be cheap and will stop them going rusty.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

The P&P from US to the UK more than doubles the price.

I'm looking at getting flanges laser cut in stainless, and assembled with SS fittings, as mild steel rusts to buggery here in damp & salty UK.

Yep they are available from the states but will set you back at least $32 with shipping, plus I prefer the look of them plain without the 2 bolt sleeves welded on the side..
I would like to make a set out of stainless, you can buy the blank 8mm flanges in SS for about £22 a pair the machine them into a pair of split.
Some better machinery than an angle grinder and rattly old vice should enable a tidy bit of kit.
I will coat mine in a good layer of hi temp paint before fitting so they don't look awful for a while at least.
I can't believe how badly the original front sets fare with a bit if water, dirt and heat. Mine have not structural strength left, just a few flakes of rust, but the header looks almost new.

Just posted the link because the other thread stated they could not be found anywhere.
We have multiple styles of split clamps to choose from and shipping from the US isn't bad if you know someone....... 8)
