vibrating baby

Post by craigybaby »

hey gang.

ive had my storm 3 months now.

ive noticed lately that there's a distinct rattle on the bike and it vibrates. really annoying when im on the motorway

it only happens when there's power on, if i hold the clutch in and free wheel its as smooth as a baby's a**. any ideas?

bit pi**ed off at the moment cos my pride and joy isnt at peak and i dont want to get butt fuc*ed by the dealer cos i aint got a clue about bike maintenance. I lube my chain, wash it regularly and do all the basic checks but i cant tell my spanners from my wrenches. :(

how 'heavy' is the rattle?

I had a rattle it was hard to ignore, that dispappeared if I pulled in the clutch and coasted. (it was almost ignorable with the ear plugs in  ).

When it became unbearable I put the bike on the paddock stand, and stuck it in gear...turned out it was the chain coming to the end of its useful life, and bouncing of the exhaust where it passes under the chain. Under power the top of the chain is pulling the rear sprocket round, and the bottom is slack; if knackered it will foul the pipe, even when adjusted up. When you pull in the clutch, the rear wheel pulls the bottom of the chain taut, and the noise disappears.

just a thought...

A Forum is rerly the best place to get advice on specific problems. One thing i would say is try and find a decent independant mechanic, if you cht to some other bikers in your area you should get pointed in the right direction.

Dont always discount the dealer, not all expect you to bend over an take it from behind. Sometimes their experience will give them the answer pretty quickly.

I disagree.... theres a good handful of guys on here who REALLY know what they're talking about as regards storms.

there's been absolutely loads of queries as far as engine/bike noises, that have been solved..... mainly because we all have one thing in common....... the firestorm!

even if none of us can solve the problem, there's been no money lost in asking.

maybe if you take a look around our forum you might find some handy hints/tips for yourself
I cant see where i suggested that people on here didnt REALLY know about firestorms.

I just suggest the SPECIFIC problems can be difficult to resolve on a forum..

I have no doubt i will find handy tips on YOUR forum, only been here for 6 months so have much more searching to do.

Well, I've only been here a month, and this is the first place I'd go for any issue, general or specific. There's a good chance somebody on here has come across the exact situation you find yourself in, or knows about it.

Model specific forums are the best source of information there is. Owners know stuff... they've likely been there and done it already, so are the most qualified to diagnose issues. I do accept that your point though, but maybe more that the internet itself can be difficult to communicate over, making problems harder to solve (a mechanic could just listen to it... forums need descriptions)

So, I'm not arguing here, just that I disagree too. The golden rule has to be: do what you're most comfortable with.

Not sure about the rattle, but mine vibrates & feels harsh when the carbs need balancing.

Well I didn't know whether he meant REALLY or RARELY. Then you can interpret it either way and peace and harmony breaks out.

(Until we get back into that debate about spelling)

ta for the info.

It's done nearly 11k (51 plate) so the 12k service is looming. I'll have a word with a local mechanic to have a look at the chain and sprockets and I'll have the carbs done too.

If that don't work then i'll have the dealer sort it out when it goes in for a service.

It's got progressively worse so I think it's a consumable that's to blame. It was lovely and smooth when I took it out on test.

Does any one know roughly how much sprockets and chain are going to cost me?

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking about have the CCT changed on the service too. How much will that cost roughly?

Chain and sprockets are about £100 or so. Probably £30 to fit for mechanic.

No idea about CCTs. 12k seems low to be changing them bu if it gives you piece of mind. I think the issue is slightly over blown but its pretty real if it happens to you. I dont see you getting any change out of £100 for the CCTs

The rest of the work for the 12k will see you abuot £150.

Realistically you are looking at a £350+ bill.

Dont forget if you are not too woried about service history then a lot of the jobs on the 12k service can be done at home.
