HELP WITH AN SP1 PROBLEM ANYONE??

Post by Jaglifter »

Went for a blast on a friends SP1 this afternoon.   Main reason was to see just how uncomfortable it is to ride. Reason being that I'd stop wanting one if it really is as painful to ride as the "experts" say. Surprisingly I found it quite comfortable. A really brilliant ride, like the Firestorm, but more of everything.

Unfortunately this machine has a problem: when it gets hot (and it got very hot today) it starts to pop (loudly) on the overrun and cuts out or runs on one cylinder at low revs. The cans aren't standard and it has a power commander fitted. Sometimes it improves when its topped up with fuel, but maybe thats because it has time to cool.

Any ideas anyone?

Are you positive it runs on one cylinder as there would be a considerably loss in power and it would sound like sh1t as for the fuel could it be the fuel filter?
Have you checked to see if it sparks on both cylinders and fuel is getting through to both cylinders?

Have the carbs been off?

I only ask as when i built my mates nc30 after camshaft changes and valves i put the carbs back on and mistakenly didnt tighten them down on the ports and fuel was escaping from the front cylinders causing it to fire only on the rear cylinders.

P.S my storm pops really loud when shutting revs off but i like it :D i thought they all did this.

Start with the basics Jag,
pull the plugs out and have a good look at them. If you've got a white/blistered plug it's running too lean on that pot and it could be either fueling or a leaking exhuast gasket if you've got a real sooty or a wet inky one it's most likely electrical.
You can just disconnect the power commander and it will go back to the original fueling from Honda but I don't think that will be the problem unless the map is way off.
When was the last time it was serviced? plugs wear out and shims get too tight, all things need to be taken into consideration.
If you got any more details I'll take another stab if you like

P.S if the carbs have been off I'd leave them that way. The fuel injection works better without them

Thanks both. I guess its start from scratch and set everything up right.

Incidentally Pete the bike belongs to the guy with the CBR400RR who came with me to the outing we had to Melton Mowbray. We're both keen to do another outing this summer.

Alan,
That would be brilliant. Let me know how much £.

Haven't fitted sprockets yet. I've got a few bits to fit, but its just too hot to work up enough excitement. Anyway, I'm off to Le Mans soon, so I'll probably have a go when I get back.

Thanks
