please help my suspension, or kitty gets it...

Post by Kitch »

Right... trying to set my rear preload to position 1 (as advised by Roger) however, mine's on position 7!!!

And the C-Spanner collar is seized and wont turn.

Any tips on freeing seized collars? Currently looking at the "whack it" theory...

I'm so frustrated at taking all the skin, flesh and bone off my knuckles on the frame that unless I get a solution, kitty's gonna have to be a vent for my anger...

don't shoot the cat just keep hitting the shock with it till it moves.

I assume you have tried soaking it in soaky stuff. try turning it with the back wheel raised by lifting on the frame or abba stand etc should be less springness against it then.

Not trying to be funny Kitch but are you sure you have that right and not the wrong way around :!: in other words you are already on one the lowest (softest) not the highest (hardest) setting :?:

If you are correct try some penetrating oil such as WD40 or plus-gas before you start beating it to death

believe me... Roger's is the first place I'm going once I get some pennies...

I hate being skint.

As for position, the manual numbers them 1-8 lowest to highest...

circled is set on position 5... arrowed is position 1 where I want it. (this isn't my shock btw, mine's still on the bike...)

well i would try put thespring under load (get someone to sit on it, the bigger the better)

get a spring clamp and clamp the spring

get the person off, this should release the tension on the shock allowing you to move it , possibly???

did it on a car once, don't see why it shouldn't work on the bike
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Well Kitch seeing as my wife breeds siamese i best try and help so the cat doesnt get it, can you not take the shock off, if so get it in a vice if you have one then get the spanner on it.
At least you wont be blagging your knuckles as theres not alot of room there and will be much easier to work on if its siezed

OK, after action report.

After 48 hours of easing fluids, molegrips on the shock for counter-torque, two-hatting with a hammer and much swearing I've concluded it's going nowhere and is probably fooked. I could maybe strip out the shock and slap it in a vice or something, but I can't be taking all the associated stuff off to get at it. Too big a job for me on my own just now.

Spent up getting the bike and new kit, so I can't afford to go getting a new shock for ages yet. Any further advice appreciated.

Sadly, this means kitty took one in the face, which made me feel better.

Alan, you rock, and I would have been over on Saturday for goth shenanigans at Leeds Uni, but alas, I'm off to London bright and early Sunday and am working till then.

Next week though, I'll have gotten my first paycheck (wooooooooooo!) so I'll have a bob over some point if that's fine by you. I can follow my Haynes book, but they're all jobs I've never done before on a storm or any monoshocked bike, so that's when things take ages and go horribly wrong...

I will of course ply you with: cake/goths/beer/coffee/cash/hookers as desired.
