New to Forum

Post by davebrannigan »

Hi all, new to the forum and indeed to the VTR. Never had a VTwin before. Had lots of bikes with singles, twins, and fours the last one being a fire blade CBR900RR1 which I had until 2010 when I hung up my bike jacket, or so I thought.

I always figured that if I got back into biking it would need to be on something with character rather than flat out madness, and following the passing of my brother in law on Christmas Day through illness we have just acquired his VTR firestorm. It might just fit the bill.

Tried to run it yesterday but the choke was seized. Stripped tank and air box and found both plungers for choke were varnished in place. Managed to free them but not before snapping the plastic nuts that locate the cables to the carb body. Through the forum I see that there are brass ones available. How do I go about getting a pair?
Now that they are off I’ll get the carbs ultrasonically cleaned too.

Not sure where this journey is going to take me. I may either have a ride i’ll Enjoy, or a bike for sale in the near future.

Ps I’ll also be after a set of rear exhaust hangers with foot pegs to put the original cans back on.

Cheers all,

Dave

Welcome Dave. Another option for your choke is to buy a service kit. The needles come with the plastic nuts and rubber boots etc. You might well find they are perished and needles might be hard to clean of varnish. They not expensive from memory.

I have a set of rear pegs and hangers spare I think. If not Mac will be along with an offer soon I'm sure.

Personally I have stayed with the stock plastic units for a few reasons.

Firstly I have never broke one in over 20yrs.
Besides that my thinking is that if for any reason the guide is cross threaded or over tightened, the guide will break and not damage the carb body.
With the metal guides if you happen to get it cross threaded or become the Hulk when tightening it down then you are looking for new carbs.

Another case of run whatever makes you happy, just be aware that carb damage can be caused by running metal guides. :D

Hey Guys thanks for the welcomes. I must say that I thought I has added notifications but hadn't received any so came looking and see there were several. Must have a play with the settings again.

I take the point that if the plastic ones break they are the weak link saving the carb body, but ally and brass are easily drilled out and re-tapped if broken and much less likely to break in the first place. Swings and roundabouts I guess.

I'm gonna go with a change I think even if I buy a carb refurb kit.

So how do I go about getting hold of brass or ally ones and the rear hangers?

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Nick, thanks for the PM. No not able to reply but just send me news if you have any and we'll work something out. I guess I should really get the carbs cleaned, repaired and refitted then have a ride on the bike before I decide whether to spend any money on it but I'm thinking I'm going to like it. Former owner had fitted high level MIG pipes to it which appear to fit to standard downpipes though it came with original pipes and another set of downpipes so they may be a little different? Anyone happen to know?

Cheers

MIG cans normally use their own link pipes, but the headers will most likely be standard Honda if original as you guessed. You can add a photo if you want clarification, on any of the headers you have,

Chris.

Hi Guys, sorry for delay. Been Megga busy sorting the rest of brother in laws estate out.

I'm going to try and attach a few photos of the pipes on the bike, the original cans and what I think are the original pipes. To the untrained eye the front pipes look the same to me but I could be wrong. Until you try and fit them I'll never be sure. Any advice gratefully received.

On a slightly different note, and I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules but I have an engine for a FJ1200 that I'm trying to shift - proceeds going to Cancer Research. Anyone know anyone who may be interested in that? As I said I've been away from bikes for nearly 10 years now so my contacts are few. Shame to put it for scrap when it looks like a runner. It has some clutch casing damage which was araldited but there's a brand new clutch cover to go on it too. He has stuffed rags in the inlet tracts and I doubt he'd have done that if it had other damage. Any interest please let me know.

Thanks,

Dave
