Pair Valve - disabling it cures the popping on closed decel

Post by amacbrown »

Hey storm troopers, as most of us have straight through cans most of us must be either loving or hating the popping from the pipes when you close off the throttle right?

Across the pond they disable a 'pair valve' which stops air going into the exhaust to allow for the backfire or popping (burt gasses better for environment). Has anybody here done so and can they let me know their experiences.

Cheers dudes

Hey dude, we dont have the pair system over this side of the pond. Thats the trade off for them having better weather than us

If yours is popping make sure all your exhaust joints are well sealed.
Rich.

If you don't mind me asking how you know we don't have this 'pair valve' system?

I think it's only the usa that have the pair system, it's an emissions thing that we dont need over here (yet). Mind you, I'm assuming you have a uk bike and not an import, if you do have an import you may have the system fitted. Dont ask me if I know how to tell an import from the real thing.

Google didnt turn up anything for the storm but I found this for the sp1/2.

Seeing as it's an american thing, the superhawk forum would be your best bet for this information.

ps. I like the popping and banging as well.
Rich.

My bike is a German import I like to think of her as a BMW VTR it limits the annoyance of having to convert from KMH to MPH !!

Do you know if the German bikes have it? I'd rather not be remoivng the fuel tank etc myself to confirm this or wasting time and efforts re-sealing an exhaust system. Thanks for your help so far dude

As I remember it, the pair valve is situated just to the right of the exhaust outlet on the front cylinder. You should see a blanked off plate there on all uk spec bikes.

Yep!
Have a look at figure 5 on Cuppa's link. If you have the Pair Valve fitted you will have one of those same caps on your cylinder tops. You can see the front one without having to remove anything, just bend over  and look( said the actress to the bishop)

Anyone I think.
Ama's trying to find out if all UK spec bikes after 2001 have the Pair system fitted.
I think Not is the answer mine was a 99 so I'm not sure. I'll bet Honda saved a few bucks on each bike and didn't fit it cause it wasn't a UK requirement

my bike is a german import and i've discovered it had a cat converter before the Scorpions were added! I'd say mine has the pair system as she pops twice every time i release the throttle and i mean every time. When she is very hot its like two shot guns going of!

As you say it may not be a UK prob as the regs aren't as tough as the Yanks or the Germans. I was just interested to see if people with the revised model (post 2001) had exhausts that "pop" more than those on the orig mark.
