How much is a CCT???

I have a '97 'storm and was enjoying a nice ridout a couple of weeks ago.

Stopped to clear a bug from inside my helmet. Whilst idleing the engine suddenly started making a very loud "rattely" sound from the engine!

Cr@pped meslelf and turned it off right away. After seeking advice and getting my brother to look at it for me, it looks like the front CCT has gone.

So, how much are such beasts, and are they easy / quick to get hold of?

If one has gone, should you change both of them "just in case"?

Any recommendations appreciated (I just ride the thing, never was much good with mechanics :(

Hi Paul
i paid fifty pound for one and can get them in three days from my local Honda Dealer.I am sure you will probably get them cheaper elswhere though.

Although the cct has gone it may have done alot more damage when my rear cct went which is a bit rare it bent the valves so everything was replaced ie valves, shims,cct etc its usually the front as this one is only trickle fed because the angle of the lump. So when storing over periods of time i always undo the nut on the end and squirt some oil down just to keep it lubed up and stop it sticking which my Honda dealer reccomended doing.

I would replace them both to be safe if you dont know when they was changed, its not a difficult job to do.

P.S. - Remember to get new gaskets also. They're only a couple of quid each.

Cheers both! David Silver site seems reasonable, will get a couple of them. Am I likely to need to replace the CCT blade(s) too or is that something different? How many of the gaskets required if replacing both CCTs?

I'm hoping it hasn't done any more damage as the bike wasn't being ridden at the time (so the engine wasn't being worked) and it was switched off within seconds of hearing the noise, with no "rattle" heard prior to it.

Would it be fairly obvious if the valves etc. had been hit too?

Hi peejay buy yourself a haines manual and 2 ccts and 2 cct gaskets from david silver then remove the cam covers and line up the timing marks and you will be able to see if the chain has jumped , if all the timing marks line up correctly give a big sigh of relief and have a drink to celibrate , if on the other hand the chain has jumped stamp and cry and prepare to delv inside to see if anythings buggered.

Rest easy, you will have not suffered any problems unless you are extremely unlucky. The chain has to have jumped in order for the valves and pistons to meet - the way the chain guide in the head sits on top of the chain it holds the chain on the sprockets fairly securely.

****IMPORTANT BIT****
Don't be tempted to take the broken tensioner out until you are 100% sure the cylinder is at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke. The valves springs are strong enough to close the valves if it isnt at TDC and this may cause the chain to jump a tooth or two - I found this out from experience only a couple of months ago.

You need 2 gaskets one for each tensioner - David Silver is the best option although sometimes they are waiting for stock, I had a 3 week wait.

Blades won't be needed, just the tensioners.
