Fuel Injection
Anybody thought to fit the FI setup from a wrecked Varadero? I'm keeping my eyes open on Ebay for one. It's the same motor, so I'd imagine it can't be too difficult. I commute every day on mine, so I'd be willing to give up say 5hp for the fuel efficiency and reliability of FI. I already fitted an '02 VFR800 tank for increased fuel capacity (stock 16L tank over here, as we didn't get the bigger tank when you guys did), but more consistent fuel economy would be a welcome thing.

Thought: fantastic idea!
Comment: very interested to hear how this goes. I like the smoothness of carbs, but the FI might be worth doing...
Snide Remark: Mwahahahaha... yanks suck!
That do? (oh, and Hello! btw)

I beleive it would be a lot more difficult than you think. For example, as the system is electronic, it will likely require a different magneto. Also, (assuming it is a port FI and not a throttle body) it will rely on crank postion to determne when to send fuel so you will need to add the mechanisms for that too. Again, if it is port FI, you will then almost surely need the heads from the Varadero too. Now apart from part, there is a quite a bit of labour adn it still may not work. Unless you plan on keeping your bike until the secong coming of Christ, I would say it,s not worth it.
Also, in regards to reliability, since when is FI (with all of its sensors, moving parts (injectors), ...) more reliable than carbs (with very few moving parts)?
If gas mileage means that much to you, I would suggest you either change your riding habits, or trade bikes.
I don't mean to throw cold water on your idea but.... If you wnat to do it as a project, then have fun but if your goadl is to save money, I think you're headed down teh wrong path

Yellafella,
Hey there, some of us actually do care about fuel mileage... Of course my reasons are a bit varied: 1. My truck averages 15 mpg, the bike averages just over 30. 2. The bike does wheelies, the truck does not. 3. I can park the bike about a block from work for free... As for fuel prices, I think more of us yanks over here would care if we had to pay what you guys do. I drive my truck when I NEED to. The 'soccer-mom' set over here driving their giant SUVs and vans w/o anybody else in the car aggravate the p!ss out of me (I realize football is your sport du-jour, but over here the term describes the clueless tw@t driving a minivan loaded with screaming kids, who regularly has no fecking clue how to drive).
Pete.L,
You got 50 mp(imperial)g... best I've seen here was 38, riding with some guys from northern Virginia, mostly backroads. However, except for the really twisty bits right at the end of our route, they ride like girls too. Some are on cruisers, so you've got to give them a 'little' slack. Oh, and here's a video I shot from those 'twisty bits' near the end of our route. The guy ahead of me is on an SV650, and in my defense, it was the 2nd time I'd ever been down that road. He doesn't pull away like that any more. 38mpg here would equate to 47.5 over there, so I'm close.
mik_str,
Agreed, it will take more parts than just the main FI setup sitting on top of the motor, but again, it's the same basic motor, so it's easier than say fitting the FI from an SP. I guess the reliability thing is more centered on cold start, then hot start, then cold start... It's kinda like debating whether 3 or 4 inches of plate-steel is bulletproof. The carbs already get the job done, but I'm a tinkerer, and want MORE
. I already installed a VFR800 tank, so it's not like I plan to sell the bike anytime in the forseeable future. I binned it pretty bad back in July '04, so it's got a rebuilt salvage title now anyway (insurance totalled it, the b8stard). I also realize full well that the gas cost savings could take YEARS to pay off the 'upgrade', but hey, if I really wanted to save money I'd just ride a bicycle everywhere... And how cool would it be to have the first FI VTR (VTRi maybe?)?
Max,
Mendip hills sounds like some of the roads over in West Virginia here. Rode over there last weekend. Lots and lots of 25mph marked corners, all the while the speed limit stays at 55.

Oh yeah, anybody got a link to microfiche for bikes over there? I can get on bikebandit.com and ronayers.com and look up the microfiche on all the US bikes, but they don't have any of the european models. If I could see the exact change between the carb and FI varadero, it'd make life easier, and might give me some insight into what exactly is involved.

I took myself on a little road trip through the Smokies when I was over there working a couple of summers back and all I kept thinking was "I wish I had my bike" You're lucky to have such a picturesque part of the country to play in. Enjoy!

I was up that way on Saturday, There was a SP in Llandovery at the cafe but I don't think it was your's as it was red (I'm sure yours is the whitey/sliver type one ??) I wasn't on the storm, I was on the BenelliPete.L wrote:![]()

I've managed to do the same this weekend though. 53.4 mpgThis time I was over in the Brecons and I don't think I can be accused of riding like a girl this time. My back tyre looks like someone attacked it with a cheese grater all up the sides. The roads were great and with the good weather it was sticking to the road like sh!t to a blanket so it just had to be pushed

We weren't that far apart then.
I'd taken the back lanes over to Abergavenny, headed up to Brecon and then dropped down south to pick up the M4 at Neath.
I'll have to keep going onto Llandovery next time, I didn't realise there was a bikers cafe there.
I'll put a post up next time and maybe we can meet up for a coffee.

The West End cafe on the corner is where most of the bikes are, there is a car park opposite as well for the overflow. there are loads of interesting roads spreading out from there. It can be very busy on a nice Sunday.Pete.L wrote:We weren't that far apart then.

I'm working weekend's for a bit now (shift patterns etc) but if you are going let me know as its only an hour or so from me and I'll try to get there if I can.
