Import or Official Model?

Post by gsh »

Hi, I am looking around to buy a new VTR. Had my 98 bike stolen back in 2001, and as I'm now back in the country permanently, it's time to get mobile again.
With the prices of a new official bike down so low , £5995 best so far , is it worth going for an import? How much will I need to spend to get it to UK spec, ie speedo and lights? Taz motorcycles offer 2002 imports with MPH speedos and 2 year warranty for £5495, and I can always do with saving the extra cash. Does anyone have any advice on this? Any big differences with the 2002 bike, and how does the warranty on an import compare with an official bike generally? Basically, is it worth the extra money for peace of mind?
Also if anyone has pointers on dealers to look for a good price, as well as an insurer who won't quote a 35 year old w/ clean license but one 2 year old theft claim £1400 TPFT (no kidding), I'd appreciate it.
Cheers

Gavin.

Dunno about price regarding new or official VTR's. Don't think there's a massive saving to be had on an import over an offical. As far as imports go I wouldn't be worried. Most good importers will have had the speedo changed for MPH and the lights sorted before selling. As for warranty well best get advice from those that have had to use the warranty they got with an import. But seeing as it's a VTR I don't think you'll have any probs.

If not get yourself on there and get in contact with Malcolm Nash (You might recognise the surname!) He can sort you out a quote. Did for me:

27, PL4 area, 98 R with Rossi Paint and Blade front end, datatagged, sp30 with 7 day ban, 6 years no claims = £550 FC with protected no claims. Sweet.

Thanks for the insurance tips - £525.35 TPFT / £1303.40 FC with H&R.
Will try Malcom Nash also.

Well, looks like there is no benefit going for an import - as of this morning Dobles are doing UK bikes 2003 for £5499! Only minor downside is that it's pre reg, but seeing as I plan to keep the bike for a fair old time I reckon I can live with that.
The dealer that sold me my old bike is willing to match the price, so it looks like I'll be buying myself quite a tasty birthday present (bday next week!)!
