Petrol issue??????????????
Petrol issue??????????????
I have noticed an odd sound coming from the Storm engine at slow speeds as in being in 1st or 2nd gear while accelerating or shutting the throttle off as in slowing down. I have only just starting noticing it, and I have been scratching my head trying to workout what is causing it.
It has now suddenly dawned on me, as I have been using the higher octane petrol since the E10 has been added to our standard unleaded, could it be something to do with the combustion of the higher octane petrol I wonder causing the pistons to slap about more,
Chris.

How many miles since the switch to higher octane?

It's probably just your loose change rattling around in you pockets...
May sound a bit daft but check the clamp on the rear header...
As you know they can rot out & if it has it can slip down & rattle about.
You'll only hear it when going slow as at speed other noise will mask it...
In fact go over the bike any loose fitting/clamps can work loose & rattle about.
Or just get some better ear plugs & don't fret it...

Thanks for the suggestions, well most of them

Re: Petrol issue??????????????
Can you describe the sound at all?
Re: Petrol issue??????????????
I have been over the bike checking for anything loose. Nothing was loose including the rear header exhaust pipe clamp as you mentioned Mac. I also checked both spark plugs to make sure they were both done up tight, as well as the front and rear cylinder head exhaust clamps, they were all done up tight.MacV2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 24, 2021 11:40 pm It's probably just your loose change rattling around in you pockets...

A job to say exactly. It sounds more like a metallic sound, and in timing with one cylinder.
I don't suppose it could have anything to do with the tick-over speed as mine is set at just over 1,000rpm.
I'll up it to 1,200rpm just to rule that out,
Chris.

I hope you can get to the cause of the sound. They can be hard to pin point!
Unlikely I'll think of anything that you will not have considered already, but just incase...
Did you torque to spec and use a dot of loctite on the bolts when you checked your valve clearances etc?
Do you have a key ring or any other keys attached to the key in the ignition?
Have you poked around under the seat and checked for a loose allen key or battery terminal?
I wonder if a cable is arcing?
When you can hear the noise; if you give the engine a small rev, does the noise increase in frequency with the timing of the engine?
Have you spun both wheels off the ground?
Does the noise dissappear as soon as you get into 3rd gear, even at the same road speed?

You got me thinking when you mentioned about the cam holder bolts when I did the shims, although I like to at least double check that bolts are all torqued up correctly before reassembling. I had visions of a cam holder had come loose So I stripped the bike down to check my work. I am no further forward, but I have piece of mind that all my work is exactly as I thought it was No faults found.Jamoi wrote: ↑Tue Sep 28, 2021 8:55 pm I hope you can get to the cause of the sound. All I have on my ignition key is a leather fob, so it can't be anything to do with that, good thinking though.
No loose tools including Allen keys under the seat, or loose battery terminals, I had them off and cleaned them very recently.
I don't think it's a cable arcing, but I'll bear that in mind.
The sound does increase with a small rev in 1st or 2nd gear, although you can't hear anything at stand still with a small rev.
Both wheels spin as normal. I checked that for the mot last week.
When I use third gear, as I'm going faster by then the wind drowns the sound out. In actual fact it's only when the rev's are fairly low I hear it in 1st and 2nd gear.
All brake calipers are tight too,
Thanks Jamie for your thoughts
Chris.
Re: Petrol issue??????????????
Is the sound the same when the engine is cold or hot?

Chain on rh side header?
Cush drive? And cush drive bearing?
Rear sprocket nut?

Rear sprocket nut?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Petrol issue??????????????
It didn't seem to be at first, but now it does.
The chain is clearing the header. I did check to see if there were any signs of it hitting the link pipe as in marks etc, when I adjusted it last week before the mot, none to be seen.
The sprocket carrier bearing was replaced with a new one not that long ago. The rear sprocket nuts are all done up tight. I will check the cush drive rubbers.
When I hear this noise in 1st or 2nd gear, if I pull the clutch in immediately so I'm free wheeling the noise disappears
Thanks for your thoughts Tony
