Running problem

Post by Johannvw10.ZA »

Hi there. Firstly im not a mechanic so my terms may not be accurate or my aproach to sorting out the problem.

My vtr was stripped down for a respray. Subframe removed all wiring plugged out for the subframe to be sprayed

Okay so after assembling all the bits and pieces after spray job. I took her out for a run around the block to check controls and that shes running okay. On initial start everything was okay. Quickly out the garage i went and at ghe first stop sign she died on me.

After few minutes of scratching and searching i noticed my stand light wasnt on when in neutral. As soon as i put it in first she died.

Plugging in and out and in and out. There was eventualy a green little 3pin plug not properly plugged in. That sorted. She went into first.

But........ no she suddenly idles rough. And theres no throttle response.

Sounds like a tractor, complete misfire.

Things ive checked.....

Took plugs out and back in again. Plug wires good.
Checked all connection plug at the back on the subframe. Checked the bbattery connection. Thats good.

Theres a little round thing on the outside of the subframe. And the thick wire is the plug wire. I might have plugged that out and started the bike without that plugged in.

Can i have caused the damage myself or am i missing something

Did you take the tank off?
Sounds like you have the vacuum line on the wrong petcock spigot.
It should be on the 9 o'clock one, not the vertically down one, that stays with nothing connected.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Yes tank was removed. Took pictures and marked the pipes. Ill double check them when i get home. Might have them wrongly connected. Cause while shes idling and i open the throttle quickly nothing happens. After a second or too she will just die.

Your picture is correct.
Because the vac line also fits on the lower stub and from the angle you look at it, it's the only one you see, it's easy to mis-connect.

The fuel connecting hose on the right in your pic doesn't have the clip in the right place, though.

Check the vac pipe again. Looks ok TBH. You didnt turn the petcock off did you & forget to turn it back on...?

But it looks like you dont have a tank breather pipe conected...

'A' in the pic. If thats blocked you will get an air lock in the tank.

Pop the tank open & if you hear a rush of air thats your issue...

You can get an air line onto that & blow it through...

Another issue you might have is if you have had the subframe painted, you need to make sure the mounting points to the frame are clear of paint as the act as an earth point.

Can you post a pic of this 'Round thing' on the subframe please... Sounds like from what you say it's the coil for the rear pot, that would be the only round thing in that area...

Round thing might be the reg rec, perhaps, if it's been upgraded to a MOSFET?

The round thing is on the right hand side of the subframe. Rec is more to the back. Round is situated about 10cm to the front from the rec.

Yes thats the one. The coil. Ill check tank hoses and all connections again. How would i go about eliminating the coil as a cause of my problems.

Easiest way is to swap it with a known good one...

Sure they can be tested with a multimeter but out of my knowlage space... Auto electricain will be your freind...

Another way is to find out which cylinder is misfiring, then swap front to rear coils and see if the misfire also moves. If it does, it's the coil.
You can identify which one by checking the heat on each downpipe- carefully-
One will be colder than the other.

Went home and checked alot of things last night. All airpipes seems fine. Coils is both working. Witing seems to be okay as far as i can check. Took the bike for a ride. Was responsive all of a sudden. Its only when pulling hard through the gears at 6k plus rpm she starts to be hesitant. Ill be digger deeper and if not fixed the next stop is mechanic.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas.

I assume it was running fine at all revs before you took off the bodywork?

If so, next to check is the petcock.
If your diaphragm has a small hole it would give these sort of symptoms.
