Airbox intake snorkel taped up. Why???

Post by MrMastodon »

Thought I'd change the air filter today (not had bike long).

Found half of the intake snorkel gaffa taped over.

Never seen this before, or heard of it being done, but was obviously done for a reason.

Any ideas why?

(FWIW the airbox lid had 2 stickers - Dynojet and the K&N filter warning one which was crossed out (and didn't have K&N fitted))

I can't think of a good reason for this- it can only restrict intake breathing. Remove and discard the tape.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks - ripped off and discarded onto the driveway with distain. Must go and find it and put it in the bin before I get in trouble :eek2

Makes you wonder what other shenanigans have been going on with it.

So, up early for a run to the coast before it gets too busy, but it was not running right at all. OK at very small throttle openings (i.e. through the village), but stuttering in a big way on anything more than tickling the throttle.

No idea if it's either related to the taped up airbag intake or whether lifting the tank to replace air filter dislodged some crap into the carbs. The latter I suspect.

Plan to re-tape the airbag intake and see if it goes back to how it was (which wasn't quite right but perfectly ridable).

Had a nice run to the coast on the Africa Twin though.

Did you replace the filter like for like ?, sounds like you need to go back to how it was then to get it spot in go to a rolling road carb specialist to get the bike properly set up

Couldn't see a brand on the outgoing filter (actually, might go and dig it out of the wheelie bin), but looked the same as the HiFlo (the cheaper one on Wemoto :D ) I put in. Certainly wasn't a K&N or anything fancy.

Yes,will try and get back to where I was. I suspect it's crud in the tank that's found its way into the carbs after lifting the tank up. The gaffa tape thing could be a elbow steer.

Might go and have a fiddle later, but it's still rather hot out.
