Changing wiring loom difficulty
Changing wiring loom difficulty
Hi,
Is changing the wiring loom especially tricky or just time consuming?
Is it all just connectors to plug in? I'm happy enough getting access everywhere but never done it before so wanted to check and get people's thoughts.
Cheers

Done it a few times...
Take a load of pics before you remove it so you can get the routing the same.
All the body work off. Tank & airbox off. The heat shield off... TPS wire runs across the frame cross member. Youl will also have to drop the undertray down. Makes getting the loom out & back in easier...
All the plugs & sockets are colour coded & different shapes so impossible to connect up wrong...There are some the same but in different areas of the bike...You've done something drasticaly wrong with the routing if you manage to connect them wrong...
Take your time & take pics lots of pic's.

Cheers Mac.
I know you'd given me price for one, but found one on eBay for under £50 that is off a bike with less than 5000 miles on it, looks clean and is totally uncut and unmodified.
So worth that to get more for the bike.

Re: Changing wiring loom difficulty
Is it weird that I'm kinda looking forward to changing it?
I build and repair computers all the time, so it's just a bigger version of that!

Re: Changing wiring loom difficulty
After an hour so with a friend with decent electric skills and a multimeter, seems the reg/rec is causing it. So new one coming this week.
So managed to get lights/dashboard all working. Should fire up fine once the reg/rec arrives and is fitted. Might extend the ground wire to the battery instead to get better contact.

Re: Changing wiring loom difficulty
So you didn't need to change the loom after all?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Changing wiring loom difficulty
No. Bought one just in case but first plan was to unplug as much as possible to see if the 30A still blew. But we were testing the new starter relay that we'd put in before and that seemed fine. So started checking the things plugged in after that and the reg/rec was giving all sorts of strange readings.
So unplugged that and started putting the other fuses in one at a time and all seemed OK. Dashboard, lights, horn, etc all working. As soon as reg/rec plugged in, fuse goes.
So ordered new reg/rec and an also going to move the ground connector to the battery as it will have a better contact.

Re: Changing wiring loom difficulty
?
The ground for the RR, or the main earth? Either way, what do you hope to achieve by doing that?
Grounds need to be directly to the chassis/engine.

Re: Changing wiring loom difficulty
One of the bolts that holds reg/rec on had the nut threaded (and it's welded to the frame), so couldn't use that. So drilled new hole in the plate that it mounts on so r/r was at a slightly different angle. Drilled another hole for the earth so it gets a good connection while I was at it.
So it is still earthed to the frame.

Re: Changing wiring loom difficulty
Make sure you clean the paint off underneath the terminal to get a good contact.
