So I think I've made some progress on the starting front.
I had it running today with a combination of Easy Start and new plugs. Much better spark with the new plugs so I think I'll go the whole hog and replace the coils too.
Given it fired up on the Easy Start one issue must be fueling. I pulled the carbs off and reduced the pilot jet size and it started easier. I also swapped the earth strap so that could have been an issue too. I think my battery is fried which is annoying as it was a new, expensive lithium one. All the starting efforts drained the car battery I was using and the jump leads were warm. That feels like there's a current drain somewhere, but it's not exactly standard so maybe I need a much more powerful battery than I thought. More investigation needed.
On the charging front should I be able to pick up a voltage reading across the pairs of stator outputs? The manual just gives resistance readings, which are spot on, but a bit of Googling suggests I should see about 20V across each pair of contacts. I get nothing but seem to get a reading from the Reg/Rec.
Edit - scratch that. I've just realised I was testing on DC when I should have been on AC

Jump leads will get warm if your bike battery is low or damaged. Try removing the bike battery and just connecting the car battery instead.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

New Yuasa battery installed on the SP2 and an optimate 4 ordered to keep it nicely charged up until i can use it

I usually stick with Yuasa batteries too, although I have thought about trying a Motobatt battery on occasions. The trouble is I know how well Yuasa batteries have served me over the years, well more like decades to be truthful. Which makes it harder not to stick with Yuasa when ordering time comes around

Got a wee 100 mile scoot out on the Aprilia yesterday while it was dry, first in a long while. one to get me out and two just to try and make up my mind come springtime what im doing with the bikes i own atm..which or all gets the axe, or if any
