Fork to Yolk Height and what's a Stopper Ring?

Post by Tempest »

I've seen it mentioned here (but can't find it now, and I can't find any mention in the workshop manual which is strange)

But what's the official positon of the top of the forks and the yolk?

The distance?

As I say, I can't see any mention in the manual at all.

also it mentiones in the manual that after you put your handlebars onto the top of the forks, there is supposed to be a "Stopper Ring"

Errr, what's that? Not sure I have them even?

Just an update.

No, I don't have any stopper ring in the groove at the top of the forks.

I guess it's not something that's NEEDED, but it's there as a safety precaution in case your bars came loose? (Guessing)

As for height of forks thru yolk. Taken a photo (please excuse cheap plastic ruler!)

The stopper ring is just a circlip that is there to stop the forks coming out of the bottom of the top yoke,
I think the amount of stick out is checked from the outer side of the top yoke to the fork and i think this should be around 10-15mm max"I seem to remember" from Rodger

Paul you do have the stopper ring its that little ring in your photo.

As for the height the forks should sit flush with your clipons unless you want to drop them through the yokes making the bike turn aliitle quicker and slightly better handling but by doing this you will be left with the clipons not sitting flush and imo looks a bit ugly but thats me.

Alan,
When you pull the forks through you're supposed to leave the clipons flush with the top yoke!!

Tempest,
You don't have a stopper ring looking at your photo (it sits in the groove 35-38mm in your pic) but so long as the yoke pinch bolts and the clipon bolts are done up tight its not a problem
As for your original question, the standard position is with the stopper ring flush with the top of the clip-ons
Lots of people pull the forks up through a bit to speed up the steering
HOWEVER
Roger from Revolution strongly recommends that you don't do this unless you've had the forks sorted coz it puts more weight on the already pitifully soft standard setup
Personally I went with a spacer on the rear shock to raise the back instead as this INCREASES the ground clearance whereas dropping the forks DECREASES it
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

Ben your clipons sit above the yokes so your forks sit flush with the clipons as for the stop ring i thought that the springy looking ring that sits in the groove as in the picture is your stop ring for the clipons.

Thanks for the replies.

So I take it the stopper ring is just like a (high tech) circlip then?

Just in case your bars are so loose that they fly off the top of the forks otherwise!!!!

I guess (as you said) also it's an easy aid to getting things lined up.
Top of bars against underside of stopper ring.

Thanks.

I won't stress about it, as I guess stopper rings are some silly price?

Re the raise the rear. I did also read (dunno if on the UK or US forums) that raising the rear put more load on the front?

Dunno if that was right though?

Just to say, that groove (near the top in my photo) does look like there is a springy thing inside it, but there's nothing there, it's just a groove with some marks around it. (presumably so the ring does not slip round)

Paul just had a closer look at your pic and can see theres no clip i have a set if you want them.

No the top of the clipon does not go under the groove (clip) just when you put your forks through the yokes make sure enough goes up through the top to sit flush with your clipon ie the depth of your clipon determines how much your forks come through the top yoke.

Yes, please that would be great....
Thanks a bunch.
Do you want anything for them?

I'm a bit confused now I must say! (Either that or I'm having a dim moment)

Errrr, the clipon sits on the yolk, and the clipon has a little piece of casting which locates in the yolk to set it's position.

Ok, so far.

But the clipon must sit below the stopper ring.. no?

I assume the stopper ring (when in place) has a larger dia than the fork tube, hence would stop the clipon rising up.

The clipon can't clip OVER the area of the stopper ring can it?

No i dont want anything but you will have to give me your address again as i have deleted all my messages again by mistake (what a tw@)

The clips are just a piece of wire that have a nick out of them so easily fit.

Correct the clipons click into the yoke determine position, feed one fork leg up through the yoke then take the clipon into position feed the fork leg up until it come flush with the clipon tighten the pinch bolts on the yoke and clipon now do the same the other side.

Heres what you should end up with if you can make it out from the pic from my bike when i had the storm front end.

Nope
If the fork top was FLUSH with the top of the clip-on it would increase the length of the forks and the steering would be even slower!!
The bottom of the groove should be flush with the top of the clip on as per my truly awful/ awesome graphic below
