Chain adjusters - Can you replace them with Allen Bolts?

Post by Tempest »

My chain adjusters (esp the right hand side) are fairly shagged (the nut almost worn round)

The right hand one is also missing the circlip (whatever that does?)

Is there any reason why I can't just replace them with some nice new nickle plated cap head allen bolts?

Is there anything about them that's special?

I dont see why you couldnt replace them,
you would need some locknuts to stop the screws backing off,
and the setscrews would have to be strong enough not to mushroom at the ends.

IMO I don't think they are just any old bolt, I think the circlip is there (well should be in your case) to pull the adjuster back when adjusting the chain, so the new bolt(s) would need a recess machined in them to take the circlip :!:

Errrrr, I only have 1 circlip on mine and that's on the OUTSIDE of the adjuster (I did wonder what it would achieve actually being there)

Hmmmmm, looks like another thing to deal with. :(

If thats the case then I would imagine that the hole in the adjuster will be big enough to take the head of the actual adjusting bolt through it, with a shoulder on the bolt resting up against the inside of the adjuster. The circlip only really needed for slackening off the chain. When I get a chance I will have a look at mine :!:

Sorry I took so long in getting back on this subject :!:

'Chain adjusters - Can you replace them with Allen Bolts?'

After having a good look at the adjusters (assuming you are talking about the standard Storm fitments) I would say the answer is NO :!:

I'm not saying it's impossible but it's not going to be a straight forward swap :!:

Yeah, I agree with you now :)

When I posted that I'd not had my Storm for long and had only taken a quick glance at the bolts.

since then, I've had the back wheel out and fiddled a lot, and can see there's more to it than just a bolt.

I'm not actuall sure if you can get the adjuster bolts out from their metal surround (which wraps round the back of the swing arm?)

I would say that the circlip holds the bolt in the adjuster :!:
