Can anyone help me here with this problem ..
Today I changed the cct springs on my storm , after holding the spring with a screwdriver I removed the cct no problem , did the spring change and put it back ok, no problem putting the cct unit into the casing ,did up the bolts and when I released the plunger it clunked nicely against the chain taking up the slack . !
Removed the rear the same way , did the spring change ok, but as I tried to put it in the engine housing after winding in the plunger and holding it in place with a small clip , I could feel resistance against the plunger and the cct would not marry up flush to the engine casing and was about 1/8 inch out from the casing.
Its as though the rear chain was taught unlike the front one .
I did gently tighten the bolts up and it pulled the cct home ok ,but when i removed the clip holding in the plunger , no clunk, as it would seem the plunger was in contact with the chain straight away ...
Is this correct , that the rear chain could be taught while the front was slack , the engine hadn`t been moved at all ...
Also it would seem that the plunger was fully in the cct and was in contact with the chain that doesn`t seen right to me !! , don`t know but it would seem odd that the front had a bit of travel to come into contact with the chain , while the rear was there straight away with no movement need ...
Can anyone throw any light onto this please !

Did you line up the static mark on the timing before taking out the cct?

Hello mate.......
No i did`nt , I hope your not going to say that I have maybe given myself a problem now ?......
If I do that , will it take the tension out of the chain so I can put the rear cct in ok ?, and not cause a problem to the front cct ?

Robbie you have knocked the timing out when changing the front you need to take the head off to make sure the cams are in the correct position before you take the cct out otherwise when you take out the cct it all moves causing problems same for the rear.Do you have a manual?
If you followed the haynes manual it doesnt tell you to set the static mark but you DO.

Not head off - head cover off. It is not necessary to take head of to adjust timing, just side covers from casing and head cover.
IMHPO it is technically possible that one chain is tight while other got slack - it depends on which position and state engine was stopped in. But whatever was the reason - it needs timing check and potentially adjustment now.

Well, since you going to adjust timing completely and will b carefully rotating it by hand even if it jums tooth - you will be adjusting it anyway, right? So I guess answer is - just follow timing adjustment procedure as per manual and you will be fine, simply be careful and it will be OK. I do not think you can really bend valves unless you are really strong guy with biiiig wrench who pays no attention to the fact that engine does not want to turn...
