Misfire

Post by Stratman »

Well, my misfire is back! The Honda dealer replaced the neutral switch in July and since then, no problems at all. Went to go out yesterday and three miles down the road, splutter cough splutter etc.

Have completely checked the fuel system/carbs cleaned so not that and it is intermittent. Then I came a across a thread on the TDM site regarding a similar problem. I had washed the bike before putting her away last time - water in the coil connectors/fuse box was the cause of the problem on the TDM site so I'm going to check all connectors and spray with WD40.

Anyone else had similar experience?

Rode my bike out yesterday afternoon (dry) and whilst in the bike shop it totally hammered down (major thunder storm) for about 20 mins.

I obviously stayed in the store (more excuse to browse bikes!)

Came out... Oh no my bikes wet :)

Anyway, rode a 5 miles home and I did notice, whilst running at 50 ish, behind some cars that I had one of two stutters.

Nothing major, just enought to notice say 3 or 4 times, it just missed a beat, which I'd never noticed in the dry.

More than that, I cannot say.

The only time I've had a problem with stuttering was after I washed mine.
I found if the petrol cap got really wet (like when I was stupid enough to point the hose at it  ) It gave me a really bad misfire
Try keeping wet away from the cap and see if that helps.

Well - I tested the neutral switch and sidestand switch again with my new multimeter. Put the instructions down on my magic garage floor and needless to say they have vanished. No trace. Disappeared . I like Star Trek and the only explanation is that my garage sits on a space time continuum. Awaiting the appearance of 7 of 9 in my bedroom imminently, so will have to be brief.

I pulled the front plug lead off - lots of gooey watery residue. Plug really tight, but removed it and although the electrodes were the right colour, the plug body was rusty and horrible ( must have been the original plugs from the replacement engine that my lazy mechanic never changed)

Put in spare plug, cleaned area, WD40 liberally on cap etc - fine, until 10 miles down the road a little misfire which then cleared itself. Went another 40 miles with no probns at all so HOPEFULLY sorted the problem.

I still get a big grim from riding this bike when it is all coming together - the only sports bike I'd really contemplate buying now would be its replacement ( if it ever happens). A VTR1200 would be AMAZING, espe if it came with ready sorted brakes and suspension!

Hi Paul (Stratman) fingers crossed that's all it was, it might pay you to replace the rear spark plug also if you've not already done so :!:

I have a garage floor just like yours :!:

Did another 130 miles yesterday, no problems at all - just had to whack her up to 140 odd in the interests of research.

Winter jobs - manual CCT's I think, sintered rear pads too, maybe get a Dynojet kit & K&N fitted as well.

Cracked plug cap? Just read something that said VTR's can be prone to them, or have you already been down that road?
Due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off!

Well I'll be damned!

Had washed the bikes a couple of weeks ago - very carefully placed a rag over the front plug 'ole. Put bikes away.

Yesterday, washed car (twice a year job, like dusting). Started her up and left to run until warm - started to cough and splutter again!

Turned off, took off front plug cap and full of water again. Bemused, did a closer inspection. There was acrack in the rubber boot - not a large one, but enough to let water down into the cap and when warm (I don't know why that makes the difference) spark tracks away. There wasn't a very sound fitting to the plug lead either. 8O

So, as soon as David Silver spares opens, its two new plug leads and caps! Also need to replace rear disc (will be EBC with sintered pads to match the fronts) and while I'm at it I'll fit the APE tensioners too.

Happy New Year everyone

Sintered pads rock! (although intresting choice to use them on the rear?)

The reason is that the rear brake on the TDM is really "fierce" by comparison, so I want to get a similar feel from both bikes as I use the rear a lot. Sometimes I forget when I'm on the TDM and can easily lock the rear by applying the same pressure as I do on the Storm pedal!
