Hello Guys and Girls, did rain stop play for most of you this weekend?? sure did for my Sunday blast.
I'm close to a decision about which cans to buy for my storm.
I'm trying to get as close to the sound of Ducati 916 with Termis. From searching the net some people say that Carbon cans have a softer sound to them than Titanium/Alloy/Steel. I beleive its primarily to do with the packing material. The materials that sound best don't last too long so there is this trade off of having to repack the cans. Does anyone have any real life experience with Carbon versus Metal cans on a storm in terms of the sound. I much prefer soft and deep and not raspy and Harley 'spit' like.
Cheers
Carbon versus Titanium
the only thing i've heard about carbon cans is that on a twin they get destroyed, the extra force from the exhaust gases on a twin puts the cans under more stress, than the smoother delivery from a 4.
i'd imagine that the two types of can are packed with the same stuff and that it deteriorates at the same rate, wouldn't have though that a carbon can gets anything different from an ally, titanium or st-stl one.
don't know if there is any truth to either of these things though, just my thoughts.

i think that carbon cans tend to die quiker on v's coz of the pulse.
think on a 4 you get 4 rapid pulses per cycle which like has allready been said smooths the engine, on a v it is 2 big pulses hence the tendancy for v's to be vibey.
the reason why a duke sounds like a duke- prilla /prilla and a vtr like a vtr is becuase of the degree of fireing on the crank. vtr's 90 degree, prilla's 60 i think and coz my heads battered and ive just finished a night shift i cant remember duke's.
the only way youl get a vtr to sound like a duke is by putting a duke engine in.
hope that helps a bit and if im talking out of my elbow im sure some one will be along and correct me

4 cyl = 2ltr , 2 cyl = 1ltr it's all relative.

Actually the main thing that kills carbon is the heat
Thats why you will see race cans with carbon surround but not road legals (coz they run hotter)
Also carbon isn't as resilient as metal coz it is so stiff it doesn't really want to bend so it will crack instead
And it degrades in the sunlight (cheaper stuff degrades faster obviously)

I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

I agree with SB.
Experience with carbon cans on fast road cars (Caterham R500's as in 0-60mph in 3.1's etc) meant using lightweight materials ie carbon can. The heat destroyed these and all got changed along the way to titanium etc. Some carbon cans got changed under warranty after 1 x track days use!!!!
