It's a standard characteristic of all VTR's. Just a feature of a very positive engagement, the opposite of which would be missed gears, or false neutrals. It's exaggerated going from 1st to 2nd because it has to avoid dropping into neutral. Better to get a very positive clunk as the gears come into engagement, than a grating as they attempt to engage.

I too have found it a bit alarming, after only previously riding fours, where the clunk is less audible. I tend to change into 2'nd as soon as the bike is rolling, as it seems worse the more revs/power is going through the transmission. And it seems better if I change very firmly, rather than trying to ease it in.

Hope this helps. I'd be interested in other people's views. Also, if anyone has found certain oils to be better than others - in terms of smooth gear changes. I just tried Motul 10/40 fully synthetic and am convinced it has made it worse. I previously used Shell fully synthetic 15/50.

YUP! mines is the same, but correct chain tension & good cush drives
lessen the effect.

I'd be interested to know what your tickover revs are ?

Mine certainly seem a bit high and wondered if reducing them would reduce the CLLLLUUUNNNKKKK

I keep my tickover at 1200, or a fraction over. A higher idle speed does make the clunk engaging 1st a little louder but doesn't affect changing gear on the move, as you are only easing the load on the transmission for a split second as you change gear - the revs don't drop right back to idle speed, or shouldn't.

hiya guys. my dad owns a VTR (like you guys). nad he complains about clunky gears. like you say it clunks between 1st and 2nd but it clunks all the way up through the box aswell. well, he says its not so much a clunk as a notchy box. it doesn't clunk changine down, just up. does any one know why? could it be the cush drive? he keeps the chain tentioned as well so it cant be that!

I guess it depends what bike he's come to the VTR from.
Honda boxes are notchy - period
If he really wants a slick gearbox then a Suzuki is the one to go for

My best advice for the storm gearbox is to ALWAYS wear earplugs and 2 pairs of socks on the left foot!! :-)

I agree with the tickover effecting selecting 1st from neutral and changing early from 1st to 2nd to aviod the clunk. It's also better to do it slowly from 1st to 2nd as the selector drum is moving quite away round and the forks also have to travel along way.

As for the rest of the gear clunkin then I've never had that, I don't use the clutch from 2nd upwards and get no cluncks at all. It's all about timing with revs and the left foot. It's all in the dogs ya know.

Certainly it helps adjusting the chain and tick over  . Anyway I do find the gear ratios in the Honda gear boxes much better adapted to the engine characteristics than in most other bikes.

I've also got the clunk 1st to 2nd and sometimes a light one 2nd to 3rd. It actually seems quiet when the bike's cold so I do think that there must be some oil that'll help when it's warm.

The other thing I've noticed was that sometimes when changing 1st to 2nd I get a type of kick-back feeling on the selector ie cl-cl-cl-clunk. Any comments on this?

Yep, know what you are talking about, I get the kick back too, and I know it is only in my head when I say this, but it seems to happen when it's raining !!

Clunk!!

I can recommend a Tectronics Quickshifter  Just nail it and move the gear lever without shutting off or using the clutch:!: Gains of up to 8ft per shift
