Jets/Shims
Jets/Shims
Is it possible to buy different size jets and the shims instead of a jet kit im really being a tight butt so i dont have to buy a jet kit as my bike has maxed me out.
im presuming i need 185 & 190 size jets according to instructions i have from dyno jet if using a k & n and aftermarket exhausts plus i will have slightly modified headers.
Also i wont have the slide drill jig you get with a jet kit so i wont know where to drill the slide correctly any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Alan,
yes you can buy jets individually. Personaly I think it's a better option to use your original needles and just shim them with a s/steel washers cause they have a better finish on them and the Dyno jet needles have been known to wear the carbs prematurely(if thet do that it means new carbs). The easyest option would be to pop it down to your local tuners and let them sort out some sizes for you. The K&N jet numbers don't always corrispond with other manufactures I believe. I'll see if I've still got a pic with diamentions for drilling the slider if you like.

jet kit
It says on the dyno jet kit if you are using a k & n plus after market pipe you should go up 2 size bigger than the jets what are installed if i have read it right.
Instead of a dj kit there is factory pro kit what some of the us guys may its worth searching on there.
thanks Pete & Toby

Alan,
The BEST advice is call Roger on 07970 915259
He'll be more than happy to chatter away regarding jet sizes, drilling carbs etc and if you tell him exactly what modifications you're running with he'll most probably look up in his big book of past experiences and give you a 99% perfect setup

I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

Apparently, the US guys on the superhawk forum swear by actually decreasing the jet sizes from standard.
Gives massively improved economy for an unnoticeble power drop.
Dunno 100% if the US version has different carbs than UK, but I wouldn't think so, they have that exhaust blanking plate to fiddle their output.

I had a Laser Duo tech system on my Storm
it was road legal with removable baffles.
When I fitted the K&N filter and Dynojets I had to drop from a Honda 185 to a Dyno jet 170 main. And I still got an extra 3 bhp across the range. Just because the diameter is different it doesn't mean they flow less they also go deeper into the float bowl.

My two pence worth.
I have to agree with Pete.
I'd go so far as to say “No way do you want to go up a jet sizeâ€
On my dyno, the majority of road bike the riders add a can and by default increase the richness of the bike.
Fit a free flow can and a performance filter to balance the in and out.
Then come down at least one step on the mains. Going up would richer the mixture, decrease the power and drop the fuel consumption.
I have seen one VTR with a 170 in the frony and a 175 in the back as the owner thought it ran better and the fact that the rear cylinder ran hotter….

That sounds like a good idea to meStyler4077 wrote:Thats him.
Nice web site.
How about a VTR URL list like the Birthday list?
styler

We could make it a sticky and have different categories depending on what each site represents IE tuning, tyres, suspension, bodywork, paintwork, exhausts etc etc
Kaz and Cuppa whats your opinions

jet kit
Just had a qoute for a factory pro jet kit from Straightline racing following the bad comments and research i did with the dyno jet kit being difficult to tune and setup with a k & n anyway 90 quid including postage where do they get these prices from?????
