bad handling storm

Post by vtr.jon »

i have had my 2000 model storm for a couple of months and

love it to bits.

the only thing that frustrates me is that i find it runs wide on corners

& seems to take a lot more effort to turn at speed.

are there any simple adjustmests to improve it a little

the suspension setting are set to original factory & its running old

macadams and they seem a little on the hard side

mine did the same when i first got it.. no amount of adjustment would cure it,
my springs were done in and the oil in the forks was in need of a change, they had not been touched from new and it was six when i bought it.. i took it to Dr Roger @ revoloution racing Near lancaster, and he gave it the full treatment £250..it solved all the front end niggles and made it HANDLE.like you thought it oughta..then i smashed the front end into a steel bollard. and ive yet to transfer Rogers internals over to the replacement forks..but thats next on my to do list...

If its running wide, then I would suggest:-

Change those Macadams, because if you can turn in quicker, they won't!

Drop the yokes down the forks by 5-8 mm OR put a spacer under the rear shock (plenty of threads on this)

Increase the damping on the front

The rear shock is a rubbish unit anyway and the springing is generally too hard. When I used to have it on the bike, however, I had the preload one notch up from standard and damping on the softer
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Ditch the macadams, I had them on mine (standard issue) and they are utter fiddler.

Took a huge amount of effort to get the thing to turn, on the plus side they do last for ever :D

Drop the yokes by 33 mm and raise the rear by 7mm on the shock which will raise the rear by over 50 mm and put renthals on it, I tell you the bike will steer as fast as you like and when it complains on the straights at high speed you got the leverage with the renthals to hang on in there.Seriously dont recomend this but thats what i done and it is the best handling bike i have ever rode and has never complained badley.Turns in really ace under 100 mph dont know above that ! Cant hang on. Know you wont but dont do it it just works for me.

Personally i wouldnt be fussed about any suspension changes! Put some Bridgestone BT014's on there and i bet you a pint the problem stops!

Macadems are dumpola!

If you still have troubles then maybe look at your sus setup!

Personally I'd crap myself with the front forks down by 33mm and the rear up by 7mm!

IMHO, it will turn in plenty fast enough well before you need that level of revised geometry, and without tank slapping too!

must admit i have gone back to stock as near as damn it at the front with 6mm at the rear and it is still ace well was before i took the thing to bits .But i just wanted to try things at the extreame. As i said not recomended. But imformative. If i was you just raise the rear 2mm at a time might not notice 2mm much but will really notice 4mm,

I fitted a 4 mm spacer on mine.
I found it was just about right, quicker turn in and no loss of stability at the top end. A good compromise in my opinion :D

Glad it's not just me then, sold the Fireblade beginning of last year as I was packing bikes up. Bought the Firestorm in October as I couldn't live without one :D Anyway love the difference in the engine, it's a completely different ride to anything i've had before but I have the same issue, it will just not turn in or drop into the corner. I hang off the damn thing but no confidence is given, to be fair I've only a couple hundred miles under the belt with the crappy weather. I've bough a 6mm spacer & the next job is to fit that but wanted to do a bit of riding as standard so I knew if the spacer made a difference. It's a '98 running Bridgestones.
